Peck’s Gauot’ Histors—Campbell’ Geography —Ci From t seen that the only change in four years bas been in geography. Warren's series had bees in use fen years previ gus to the introduction of Corncil"s two years | it is not, therefore, very evident how pockets of parents have been plucked. Da | the contrary, the Washington School B: ard | deserves credit for its opposition to change. the same time it ought to have the sams privi. | lege of making “improvements” which has been | so liberally exercised by other boards in rela. | tee to the physical and temporal wauts of the | city. We have had no opportunity to examme fas data above set forth, but from the reliability of our correspondent, “KR,” have no doabt of its general accuracy. We think, however, it sus tains just the point we made, and shows quite | conclusively that however conservative 0: | school boards may have been in the past, we | have now fully entered upon the period of change at “constantly diminishing interva's.”’ It is no longer a question of keeping in books that have held their position from fifteen to twenty-four years. The intervals are gotting #0 fine, in fact, that Col. Stocking and theother Gisinterested friends of the book publishers, thiuk they have succeeded in persuading our school board that s series ot text-books adopted less than two years ago,on the warm recom- | mendation of the text-book committee, by a vote of 17 to 3, should besummarily to make room for a combination series of their own. We believe in “improvement” in school books, as in every thing else, but in the present active competition amongst publishers to keep their books up to the mark, we dout if any such superiority can be shown of one over azother as to justify the displacement of text-books adopted leas than two years ago by a neariy unanimous vote of the board. It should be added that the trick the publish- ets have of issuing new editi ons at short inter- vals, amounts virtually to a chan,e of text books, as parents are compe lied to buy the ne iseues, however trivial the changes. 'There have been numerous changes of this kind in grammars and arithmetics; the new editions beimg published with rules, &c., 80 directly conflicting with their predeces- | sors as to make it impossible to use the pew and old editions in conjanc- ton. Then again many more text books are put | onthe list than 1s Teally needed. For instances, there is no earthly use for four arithmetics; and the tame surplusage runs through other branchesof study. Again, the practiceof book- sellers of giving teachers a percentage on books purchased is a vicious one, and tends to swell the pumber. It seems to us that not only shoal there be a rule forbidding the change of boo! oftener thanonce in five years, but that the present long list should be revised and re- duced. A Wasrr™ Currescy.—It was a principle laid down by Sir Thomas Gresham as long ago 88 Queen Eiizabeth’s time, that a better anda ‘worss currency cannot circulate together, but that the worse will drive ont the better. In the | early colonial history of New England, when the law made wampum, and corn, lega! tender it caused the exportation of specie as fast as it | was brought in by new settlers. Then, asnow, | | | a | the country was drained of specte to buy fer- eign goods, and the deteriorated currency, | available only at home, served to keep up high | Prices. Some of the shrewd pilgrim fathers undertook to inflate the wampum currency by | manufacturing it on their own account, bat the | Jarger supply did not help the finances of the colonies. The more of it made the more it de. | preciated. We have now a large ‘“‘wampum”’cur- rency afloat that serves to banish specie and | keep up prices, yet some of our financiers seem to think that the real need of the country is more wampum. The experiment, if made, will be apt to turn out as it did with the New Eng- land colonists. a —— It is rather a joke on the committee that M Henry S. Davis, memorialist, moanting the stand with alacrity as a witness with a grief, should proceed then and there to read long, dreary columns from the defunct Patriot, and | like publications of the fossiliferous period. | ‘The committee groaned and yawned, and be- | seeched this awful witnese to let ap on them, | but he persisted in reading on, and on, and on. And when he had finished reading his evidence in chief, the most tritting question in the oe Of cross-examination would send him back to his Patriot files for an anawer. But no doubt | the independent specials will telegraph away as usual: “Very damaging testimony to-day sgainst the corrupt Board of Public Works.” a a The escape of Rochefort and his companions is, it seems, the subject of a diplomatic corre- spondence between the French and English | governments. The latter declares that the | vessel in which they escaped was a French | craft, and that she fraudulently hoisted the | British flag. According to the Soir, the French | Ministry believes it cam prove that the vessel ‘was equipped and prepared in a British port, and that the government there could not be ignorant of its destination; siso, that as the es- cape took place under the protection of tne flag of England, that country should be held re- | *ponsib ie. — --— - -2ee--—____ It must have been peculiarly gratifying to the members of the Royal Geographical So- ciety and the friends of Dr. Livingstone that the Queen aud the Prince of Wales sent their empty carriages to the funeral at Westminster Abbey.
