G STAR. CROSBY 5S. NOYES...,...Editor. Largest Cirenlation in the District, Beading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY THURSDAY. April Where to Advertise, Taz STAR, which, from its start, has been the pa- | & per of the people, has, by the pains taken to make 1t meafe, reliable, newsy and acceptable visitor to every family, gained @ popalarity amongst all classes of the © mmunity second to that of no newspaper in the country with the same srea of population. Keep- ing full pace with the extraordinary growth of the | city, and reaching every housshold inthe District, | ond a wide range outside, Tez Stax hasnow at- | tained a circulation very much larger than tbat of | all the other city daflies combined. This is no idle | claim, but one we are prepared to establish at apy time by “beoks and papers.”” And this circalation, #2 mated above, is universsl, reaching the bust- bess community, the wealthy, the great indus- trial forces, the skilled mechanics, the laboring men, the bankers, the merchants, the house- the government employes, the Congress. men—im short, there is no circle where Tur @rax is not s regular and welcome guest. The result is that Tre Stax affords unsurpaseed ad- vantages as 8 mediom of communication between Sil classes of the community, 1m the way of the ad vnstment of demand and sappir. The School Book Question. Eiitor Star:—Your article in last night's Stax, beaded “Triumph of the School-Book Lobby,” is, | think, a little ahead of the times. it takes two-thirds of the whole Board of Trus- tees to change a text-book. There were batten votes in favor of Mr. Wolf's reselation to re- commit, not a majority even. Three of the ten were not ready for a change, one of whom spoke against it. The matter stands thus: The com- mittee on text-books must agree on some book cr books to take the place of Cornell’s. Whea they have reported to the board, if they can agree, their report lies over until the next stated meeting, when it will require fourteen votes to | adopt it. So that tosay that “the book dis- | placed was Cornell's geography,” is not strictly correct. Do you ree it? x. It would sppear from the above that some of the Trustees voted for the resolution under a misconception of its terms. The resvlation j Teads as follows: “Whereas, a great deal of dissatisfaction exists | in relation to The geographies in the public schools; and, whereas, the committee on text- | books have, by vote of three to one, reported ‘u favor of the expulsion of Cornell's series: ‘Theretere be it “Resolved, That the whole matter be referred back to the committee, with instructions to re- port a series to take its place, ana that the same be made by our next meeting.” ‘This definitely instracts the committee to “report a series to take the place” of Cornell's geegraphy, and they are further instructed to burry up the job by the next meeting. The grand army of parents who have been so con- tinuously victimized by changes of school books, will be glad to hear that the vote on the resolution does not really carry the question, #nd that it will require a two-thirds vote to change or adopt # text-book. As regards the inability to agree on any other geography, we learn that the project is to take one each of “Guyot's,” “Warren's,” and “Our World’s,” thereby making up a combination series to oust Cornell's. We have another communication complaining of the charge made by Taz Stax that ‘Cor- nell’s geography was thrust on the schools only @ few months ago by the same system of drum- ming and lobbying that haf now been brought into play so successfully to effect another change.” (ur correspondent enumerates the Gefects in the geography superseded by Cor- neli’s, and says that the change was made on the recommendation of the committee on text- books by a vote of ITto3. He adds: Corneil’s series were used for the first time in September, 1 been made to the board by any of its members regarding the book. No intluence was used by ent for Cornell other than to furnish embers with a set of books, and direct their attention tos —— betweenthe two. No | intluence was used or attempted by outsiders, and, in fact, if my memory serves me, but little interest was taken in the matter by others than trustees. The » agent for Cornell (Mr. Soper) 1s a gentleman, and woud not stoop to d> a mean <r questionable action in order to accomplisy . is purpose, but depends solely on the merit o As we have already stated, we do not propose to take any sides in the fight amongst the pub | lishers further than to protest against the con- tinual changes made tn school books for thei benefit. Doubtless there were faults, as pointed out by our correspondent, in the geography (Warren's) ousted by Cornell's; doubtless there are raults in Cornell’s, and we have no doub that quite as many faults can be pointed out in the present competing geographies. What w contend is that, if the present geography was | meritorious enough to be recommended by a+ competent 2 committee on text books as Messrs. McLellan, Harris and Champlin, and adopted by the decisive vote of 17 to 3, there is no reason why it should be so speedily displaced, and the pockets of parents plucked to buy a new series; the more especially as this is bat the entering ‘Wedge to other changes in schoo! books. ——_—_—__--e--__ Judge Thurman yeeterday in behalf the com- mittee laid down the law to “special” libelers. | He told Gibson, of th York Sun, that he | could not refuse to answer the questions of the committee on the ground that it wasa privileged communication. “If it were,” Judge Thurman said, ‘it would be perfectly easy for any malig- nant person to seater bis libels broadcast over the whole country without any responsibility whatever for his action. If he could, by merely disclosing them to a member of the press, pro- | cure their publication everywhere, and the member of the press is entitled to say this isa privileged communication which I will not dis close, then, as I said, any malignant person might with impunity disseminate his libels far | ‘and wide over the country. That is not the law. | ‘There is no such thing known as a Privileged | communication, and there is not a court in the | country from the highest to the lowest, in which if you were called upon to testify in relation to the matters that are now under investigation before this committee, if the court had | of jurisdiction to inquire of them, that it would not | requite you to answer the question; and subject | you to punishment, if you failed to answer. —_____-+e--___ A Busy Conagsroypext.—Macaire Dana’ “umble tool, Gibson, finds it a very troublesome | matter to furnish any authority for his Hes | about the District government and members of Congress. He has been so very busy, he says, that it has been quite impossible for him to qualify himself to answer the committee. He | sat up all night to do it but daylight came, and still he was as far as ever from the ability to make aclean breast of it. How he must have striven with himself in those silent watches of the night to induce Gibson to tell what Gibson knew about manufacturing slander from whole cloth. —___—_—_-<ee-_______. It will be seen by our telegraphic column that the French Transatlantic Company has lost yet another steamer, Within six months. This is ‘bad luck; but it is to be said in behalf of the management that there has been an exception- ally small lose of life by these disasters. If anyboay wants to ruftie the temper of the elegant and urbane Kilbourn they have only to intimate the possibility that he may be confined in the same coal-bole with the dirty Gibson. } tr 0: All complaints in Tew oure to the contractor for the removal cf should be addressed to the 22, OolamMa Building, » YOUNG MSN SPECIALLY TaviTaD To be 2 3; Es + a.
