Father Stanton, of St. Jobns’, Baltimore, as sub-deacon. Kev. P. F. McCarthy, pastor of the Church of the Im- maculate Conception, acted as master of cere- monies. Among the clergymen present we noticed the Kev. Fathers Walter, Kane. Berot- i, and San Martino, of Washington, and Kev. Addresses were delivered by Judge Moore and Kev. Father Roccofort, and very acceptable music rendered by the newly-organized temperance choir, an- der the able direction of Miss Hoffar. Twenty men, and a large number of ladies, took the pledge and identified themselves with the so- ciety. The sixth pablic meeting will be held ou the fourth Sunday in April, announcement of which will be made in the advertising columns of Tae Star. At4 o'clock in the afternoon a new Catholic total abstinence society was organized in Wil- son's Hall, corner of 19th street and Pennsyl- vyania avenue, with the following officers: Pres- ident, Michael Burke; first vice president, Wil- lam Ryan; second vice president, B. J. ’Dris- coll; secretary, C. B. McCenna; financial sec- retary, Gilbert Gannon; treasurer, William Compton; marshal, Michael McCormick; ser- geant-at-arms, P. Iyan. It is proposed to make this a beneficial society. A MEETING OF THR PASTORS of the District churches was held at noon to- day in the parlors of the Y. M. C. A., to take ac- tion in reference to the temperence queation. Rey. Dr. Chester was called to the chair, and J. H. Appleton secretary. Dr. Butler, from the committee on inviting the Catholic clergly reported that a number had been called on, and while all favored temper- ance, some did not approve of legislatio# on the subject. The bills proposed, he believed, met with their approval. Rev. Mr. Hall stated that a committee of the sired to confer with the pastors; wes taken at this point. r. nesses when Dr. Parker, the chairman of the last meeting, stated that the object was to consider the subject of temperance, more particularly the bills introduced in Congress—Mr. Lawrence’s bill amending the Metropol- itan Police act so as togive them power to break up all places where liquor is sold without license, and Mr. Monree’s bill, which is drafted after the Obio damage law. Dr. Gray also stated that Major Richards was of the opinion if the first named bill is enacted into a law he can close up all unlicensed places, and probably 500 such. He further stated that the bills were in the hands of a sub-com- mittee of the District Committee. He moved that when the committee are ready to hear them that all the pastors of every denomination, in: the passage of the bills. Messrs. Cleveland, Baker, Tiffany and others urged that the subject should be placed in charge of mmittee, and after considerable discussion, Kev. J. H. GEORGETOWN River News.—The steamer New York ar- rived from Philadelphia with miscellaneous cargo, and the Lady of the Lake cleared for Norfolk with four and other merchandise. Grain Trape.—The only receipts of grain to-day were 350 bushels wheat by rail for H. M. Talbott, and 3,100 bushels wheat, 250 bushels corn and 90 barrels flour by boat. W. H, Bill- myer for J. Waters. ‘HE Cuatn Bripag CompLatep.—The Lit- tle Falls bridge, (commonly known as the Chain bridge,) was completed on Saturday evening last except a small quantity of filling to be done on the Virginia side which will be finished to-day, so that the bridge will be pass. able to-morrow. This will be a great benelit to the farmers in Virginia residing in the neighbor- hood, as they have been compelled to cross the Aqueduct toll bridge. A dispatch from San Francisco gives a most extraordinary instance of a young man’s hair suddenly turning gray. He happened to be standing near a pallnead depot in Virginia, when & man was run over by a train and had his legs eutoft. The frightened epectator of the dread- ful accident fainted away, and when he was brought to consciousness his hair was white, although it had been black afew minutes be- fore. Fretout HanpLers STRike.—A number of the freight handlers at the Jersey City depot of the Erie Railroad have been on astrike for some days, and there is a great accumulation of freightinconsequence. On Saturday there was a conference between the Erie and the Penn- sylvania authorities, at which it was deter- mined to make no concessions to the strikers, and pay no more tuan seventeen and a-half cents per hour for handling freight.
