EVENING STAR. | ———————————SS———=—=——=—= CROSBY 8. NOYES. ..,...Editor. ———————————————— Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON CITY: arch 23, 1874. An Honorable Withdrawal. It is well known that = veralof the gentlemen who signed the memorial presented to the Sen- | ate by Mr. Thurman have expressed dissatisfac- | tion with the position they had been drawn into, ‘and have utterly disavowed any connection ‘with the recent proceedings, ostensibly 1n their | behalf, before the Congressional Committee. ‘The signers to this memorial were as follows: Jobn B. Oagett, Jesse B Wilson, Charles Edmonston, | 8.5. Bowen, Willines B. Jackson, ‘Charles Stott, J. Van Hiswick, Marebali Brown, Jobn E. Kendall, Horatio N. Easby, a. W. Kennedy & Co., Francis Wheatley, Samuel Fowler, Henry Thern, Charles M. Matthews, Joseph B. Bryan, B. Mackall, jr. Some of these gentlemen have within the Jast week declared their purpose to withdraw their names from the memorial; finding that they were being used for mischievous pasposes, snd to the serious injary of the city and its business. (ne of them, Mr. Purdy. an old citi- zen of bigh character, and one of the largest real estute owners in the list, has taken that manly and honorab e course, as will be seen by Bis letter to the Investigating Comanttee, pud- lished elsewhere. He says that, feeling some- what nettled at the amount of his taxes, he put bisname to the memorial without reflection, but that in turning the matter over in his mind | be cannot fix upon asingle act of the present Beard of Public Works that had anything morally wrong in it. Therefore, as an act of Justice to himself as well as to the gentlemen whove conduct is impugned, he asks to have his mame erased from the memorial. It isto be hoped that the other memorialis's indicated, who signed hastily and now see their mistake, will not be deterred from withdrawing their names by any false delicacy towards those who | misied them. | One of the most heartless acts of cruelty we remember to have heard of for some time has been brought to light through the recent devel- | Opments in relation to the charges against Com- missioner Baker, of the Pension Office. The Commissioner in his reply to the charges says the only drones in bis hive were Mrs. Barnard nd one R. J. Hinton, both of whom for a long time held sinecures. And now steps to the front Mr. Hinton, and under the solemnity of an Oath, admits that he did ho d said sinecure but not for quite a0 long a period as Gon. Baker states; that he was forced into it ‘against his own judgment and inclination;” that he did not then and does not now believe im such method of compensation” (for political services); in fact that the whole thing was a conspiracy and that be has reason to believe that the arch con- spirators in this case were the Secretary of the Interior, Hon. J. M. Edmunds, Senator Chandler and ex-Senator Harlan. They are willing to take the responsibility of that act_a Feeponsibility which belongs to them and nt to d@eponent,” says this imnocent victim of a sin- ecure, and crying, “Save me from my friends,” forthwith washes his bands of the whole trans- action. The cruel leartiessness of the thing that the poor fellow should have been com- pelled to draw his salary month after month without performing any service whatever, while “* bis duty to the public as a journalist required be should send forth” long and earnest letters Protesting against similar abuses in the civil service. Where, , where was Gatchel? Members of Congress seem to vote sometimes on the belief that any kick at the defenceless people of this Discrict will be popular with their constituents. They do their home people injas- tice, no doubt, by attributing to them this nig gardly, narrow-minded feeling toward the cap- ital of the nation,in which all have a pride. ‘This fact is attested by the views of the most enlightened representative press of the country. ‘Thus the Philadelphia Press says of a recent vote in the House: “Yesterday the House refused to make a meager appropriation of $250,000 for a bridge over the Eastern branch of the Potomac &@ work which comes under the jurisdiction o Congress solely, and which was necessary fo- governmental uses. This looks very much like cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face.” We do not believe that « single home vote wil be gained by any one of the members who thus underrate the intelligence, public spirit and national pride of their constituents. A correspondent i; the Baltimore Gazett submits, in view of the recent appointment of €x-Governor Grabam, of North Carolina, and Judge Jere. S. Black, of Pennsylvania, to ad- just the boundary line between Virginia and Maryland, that such action is too precipitate, from the fact that the S2d clause of the 10th Section of the Ist article of the federal consti- tution expressly provides that ‘no state shall, without the consent of Congress, enter into any agreement or compact with any other state.’ ‘The Gazette does not believe, however, this pro- vision applicable in the present case, because Congress did not establish the line between Maryiand and Virginia, but it was fixed by their respective charters during the earlier co- Jonial period, and therefore the right of eminent domain isin is in them exclasivel, ——+.ee- We are reminded by a note from Col. Adolf Butro that we have not called attention to his lecture to-night at Willard’s Hali. The note basa dainty little vignette printed in appropri- ate silver leaf, representing a sturdy son of toil pegging away with as pickax. While doing so be gaily remarks, «‘ Labor omnia vincit;” which seems & very good motto indeed for Mr. Sutro, who is the most indefatigable, enterprising and eloquent, as well as the hands»mest of men. His lecture to-night on the famous tunnel iden- tified with his name, and on mines and mining generally, cannet fail to be interesting. We must not forget to add that he specially invites the attendance of the press. } --- First Gun for the Memorialists—the defeat of | the appropriation of $250,000 for the bridge across the Anacostia. The note-shavers among | them, who thrive when business is dall and money scarce, will no doubt exult, but those of the memorialists who are engaged in legitimate | business which brings them in sympathy with the mass of the community will hardly laugh with any great heartiness, yuspect, over the career of the appropriation-defeating bail they | bave set in motion. +222 The gifted teleg: apher to the Cincinnati Com- mercial, amd Chicago Tridunc, says that “Col. Hinton bas made himself obnoxious to the ‘Washington papers by his vigorous attacks on the District government.” So the milk In that | \5 | | coeoa-nat is accounted for. But whataccounts | Shr for the sympathy of the talented aforesaid tele- grapber with the gallant and vigorous Colonel’? is it the pathy of dead.
