About 8 o'clock last night considerable excite- ment was caused in an alley in South Wash- ington by the report of two pistol shots and the screaming of @ woman, which, reaching the earsof Officer Kearny, he went to the place, ‘when he found a colored woman, named Mary E. As regards the extent of the dealings of Biumenberg & Co. with contractors, it seems to be difteult nog at the exact figures. Major Vanderburg denies that he has had any deal- ings with the firm, and says that if any of the certificates sold by him reached the hands of medical | and G streets, and the exer- | | that company, it was from other parties who bought them from him. In regard co other | contractors, who did have dealings with the company, it is now said that report has magni- fied the sums. There seems to be no doubt, however, that the firm had been dealing quite heavily in District securities, but we under- stand they do not consider them in the light of collateral to be redeemed in the exact certificates sold, but in equivalent certificates. Certificates of the auditor of the Board of Pub- lic Works appear to have been the principal securities taken, but a fair proportion of bonds of the District were put up by some of the bor- rowers. Mr. Andrew Gleason, it is said, put up 18-year bonds to the amount of $13,600. At any rate, should the firm fail to produce the collaterals when due, there will be a good chance for litigation for wyers, the benefit of the 5 It should be added that Mr. Frank, whose name bas been mentioned in the matter, had no connection whatever with the tirm of Blu- menbarg & Co. poe: ‘Tre District Fire Derartwent.—at the meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners last night, the re) of the chief engineer for the month February was in which he states that during the month thir- teen alarms were turned in for fires, invol- ving a lose of $23,000; that by authority of the board he had appointed (temporarily) Wm.
