They claim that interference with their sport is wholly unjustifiabie; that the birds which they use for targets are shot by sports- men the country over for recreation the same a8 woodcock, or snipe, or reed birds; and that persons who object to the sport as unnecessarily crue}, go altogether too far in carrying out their notions of what is and what is not cruelty | to animals. The opponents of the sport take the view ‘hat there are many Objectionable features in it; that the shoot- ing of the birds is not for the purpose of | Securing food, but is dene for a prize, and that Consequently it is wanton and without justifie: tion. At these matches the birds are frequently wounded and have their legs or wings broken, and in that condition return to their cotes to suffer and die. They also claim that these matches have a tendency to harden the hearts ' of the young men and boys who attend them by accustoming them to scenes of cruelty, and that for this reason if no other, they ought to be suppressed in many instances. The Alexan- | dria Gazette shows up another objectionable feature in pigeon shooting matches. It says: “This morning = young gentleman called Upon an acquaintance who owns a large pigeon loft on the wharf, for the purpose of procuring & squab for his sick mother. He was told that bis request should be granted, and the porter was at once sent to get the bird, but when the latter entered the loft, instead of distarbing and driving out hundredsof Bg remrst as he ex- pected ashe had al retofore done when he went for a like purpose, only two old Pigeons fiew out. but he found fifty youn, Squabs dead in their nests that had been starve: to death. The owner of the loft, when informed Of what his porter had seen, sent to the pro- prietor of another large loft’ and learned that the same mortality existed among his pigeons. All the old birds bad been canght to be shot at, and killed or wounded in the late shootin, and the young birds consequently lett —____-<e--_____ In answer to the assertion by a cotemporary that “‘if Mr. Corcoran and the obstructionists who have asked this investigation at the hands of Congress would pay their just taxes the schoo! teachers would have money to go to mar- ket with, and there would have been no neces- sity for Mr. Hoar’s resolution,” Mr. A. Hyde ays: “So far as Mr. Corcoran is concerned all his just taxes and all his taxes, out of which the teachers could reap any benefit, or out of which any school tax is reserved, have been tully paid into the District treasury in cash.” Mr. Hyde means by this that Mr. Corcoran has paid all his taxes except special taxes for improvements. Now, asthe school fund is largely in debt to the general fund, :t will be seen that this dis- tinetion is not well taken. And Mr. Hyde, as & friend of education, should be carefal how in his real as the spokesman of Mr. Corcoran he instils m the minds of the young the idea that taxes for public improvements are unjust. It is apparent from the admissions of the counsel for the memorialists, and from the fact that they are delving at random amongst the documents accompanying Gov. Shepherd's ‘answer, that they are all at sea in the matter Of what definite specitications they will make against the District government, euch as can be seriously treated by a committee of investiga- tion. In fact, it is reported that the best lawyer among the counsel for the memorialists does Bot attempt to conceal! his disgust at the flimsi- ness of the charges and evidence thus far indi- | cated by their clients. | Col. Jobn 3s Mosby is fu te ually “io in the hands of his friends,” and has consented to be a candi- | Gate for Congressional honors at the next elec- tion. So says the Warrenton (Va) correspond- ent of an Alexandria paper, which says: “We are satisfied of one thing; that if Col. Mosby were returned to Congress be would be of much more real service to this district and the South- ern people than any other man we could select.” ‘The correspondent thinks Mosby can be easily elected. * ‘The appointment of Col. Robert W. Hughes to the judgship in Virginia made vacant by the death of Judge Underwood, continues to elicit commendation from all sources in the state. A correspondent, writing from Culpeper Court House, says that though Col. Haghes could not be governor, it is thought he will make a good, and what is better, & just judge. Tt is stated now that Mr. Corcoran will al- vance & month's pay to all the school teachers. ‘This is weil. Now let the wealthy memprialists advance the pay for all the other District em- ployes and laborers, to enable them to keep the wolf from the door while basiness and work is paralysed and resources cut off by the ‘‘inves- tigation” obstructions. +se-- The Springfield Republican notes that quite a number of the towns in western Massachusetts have chosen women as members of school boards, and says they were chosen not as the candidates of either party, bat from a sensible conviction among voters generally that it was & good thing to do. | “The Influence of Altitude on Health” is ably treated of, in a recent article, by the editor of the Washington Evestne Stan.
