As a matter of conscience and justice the wealthy memorialists should advance the money, monthly, to pay not only the teachers of the white schools of Georgetown, | but the teachers of all the schools in the Dis- trict, and also the police, the firemen, all the | other employes and laborers of the District, who | are compelled to go without their money while the memorialists indulge in their luxury of | spite-work and obstruction. The pitiful little ®0p to public indignation in the shape of afew | thousand dollars for a few selected teachers— | which scarcely amounts to the daily income of the donor, or rather lender—will not serve the Purpose intended. ‘The South Carolina legislature must be a de- lectable body, judging fro: report of the pro- | ceedings published in the Charleston News. According to the report one noble legislator shouted at another: “You shet your mouf;” while another delicately alluded to a brother member as ‘that thief from Darlingtoy,” upon which the person referred to said: ‘If I have robbed anything I expect to be kukluxed by just such highway robbers as the member (Greene) from Beaufort. If I get in the peni- tentiary I won't ask for $65,000 to support me. Thomas Jefferson Randolph, of Virginta, who is @ grandson of Thomas Jefferson, and who bas held many positions of honor in his native state, is out in a letter to Col. Mosby, giving his political views. He says that Gen. Grant evinces a desire to carry out his patriotic words, ‘‘Let us have peace,” and asks, ‘shall we not cheerfully acknowledge every act of Justice and conciliation on his part, and giv> him the merited support?” The Virginia S-n- ftinel indorses the letter, and in 80 doing, sll “Send bo more sach representatives to Con, as those we now have there, to carry on aac: tious war against the government. Send men to Congress whose election is a pledge of our good faith and earnest desire to support the govern- ment. As you cannot gather ‘figs from thistles, OF grapes from thorns,’ so we cannot expect the favors and benetits of the government as long as thore who represent us at Washington are a thorn in its side. It is time for us to take a new departure.” It would seem scarcely possible that even the meanest enemies of the Board of Public Works could carry their malice te the extent of de- stroying the beautiful trees being planted out upon our streets by the parking commission, and which are intended to furnish grateful shade, not only for the present population of Washington, but in a yet greater degree to con tribute to the comfort and enjoyment of those who come after us, our children and our chil. ¢ren’s children. And yet, disgraceful as the fact is to human nature, it is a fact that sever: efforts have been made, as on Lith street, above the Avenue, on 15tb street, and in other quar- ters, to destroy the choice young shade trees set out with so much care. All good citizens should cosperste with the police in the effort to detect and punish the scoundrels engaged in this van- dal work. | ______-«ee- The Alexandria Gazette now comes forward with & suggestion looking to economy in the matter of government expenditures, and says members of Congress will have a splendid op- portunity for carrying out their economical desires when Representative Hunton, of Vir- ginia, introduces his bill providing for the re- moval of the Washington navy yard to Alexan- Gris! “The proceeds of the sale of the present yard,” says the Gazetfe, “will bay the lot and erect the necessary buildings in this city, (Alexandria,) and still leave a handsome sur- plus; and by the proposed change the great and invariabie expense incurred by the ground- ing of all the vessels of large size that attempt to reach the present yard, will be saved.” ‘This is a very good sto: for the marines. <_< ___— Itis reported that when the “independent” editor of some Alabama paper, who charged Judge Busteed with misappropriating money was called before the House Judiciary Com- mittee a few days since to substantiate bis ac-. tions, he “flanked,” to use a Westernism, and said the charges were untrue, and he knew it when he printed them. He said Judge Bus- teed had attacked bis paper once, and he was determined to get even with him.
