EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOTES.......Eaitor. Largest Cirealation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY; TUESDAY........ ‘The Nationa! Grange of the Patrons of Hus- banédry has deemed proper to discontinue the publication of weekly bulletins showing the strength of the order. In November and De- cember last about twenty-five handred subor- | dinate granges were organized, and the mem- | Dership aggregated about 750,000. Since the beginning of the year the growth of the order bas been even more rapid, until now it js ascer- tained on good authority that the total mem- bership is nearly if not fully 1,250,000. Thenew order of the Sovereigns of Industry has not yet made much headway. The Patrons or Grar- | gers admit no person except he or she be inter- ested im agriculture, while the Sovereigns open | their doors especially to mechanics, and in fact | to every person in city or country of good moral | character. The revocation of the charter of the Boston grange of grain merchants created anuch feeling in certain quarters sgainst the Patrons, and, it is understood, suggested the formation of a ngw organization which should not be so particular relative to admission of Spplicant: aE | It seems that, after all their clamor, the me- ‘Yworslists have not been able to present a single definite specification in the way of charges | egainst the District government. They have, | at this late day, issued a circular to the officials of different cities throughout the country, asking for information im regard to pave- ments, sewers, and prices for the same, and it is evident that they have really po knowledge whatever In regard to work and prices here, or whether it is defective or expensive as compared with similar work else- where. They are therefore at this late da: Sending out a drag-net in the desperate hope that they may somewhere pick up some points to sustain their allegations. They are th in the disgracefal attitude of not only with Congress and the Investigating Commit- tee, but of unsettling business and hindering | Progress, to the injuryot the whole comm: nity, without a particle levidence, that would | be called evidence in any court of law, to sup- | port their allegations. ‘The setting apart of seats in places of public amusement as ‘“‘reserved,”’ the tickets for which eats have not been sold, in order that persons who have not secured seats, but desire eligible places, may be compelled to pay a higher price than the advertised rates of admission, isa prac- tice which has prevailed in this and other cities and been much complained of by patrons of theaters and concert rooms. Several of the against the practice, and the District Legislature at its last session passed an ordinance forbidding it, and rejuiring proprie- tors of places of amusement to post the printed Jaw in @ conspicuous place on their premises. ‘The first cases under this law were before the Police Court to-day, and the defendants did not deny the acts charged, but take the ground that the ordinance is not valid, which question is to be argued at some future day. The decision ‘will be looked for with interest. We are afraid our report of Mr. Hoar’: reso- Jution that passed the House yesterday, cirect- ing the District committee to “report torwith a Dill which shall compel the payment of the wages of the school teachers of the said District’ did not give the complete text. As the school funds of several of the northern and western cities are notoriously bankrupt, and the teach- ers in the same unpaid, it is evident that the Fesolution must have read as follows: * Resolved, That the Committee on the District of Columbia be directed to report forth with a bill which shall compel the payment of the wages of sebool teachers of Philad ‘Cincinnatl, St. Louis, Chics and the District of Columbia, which are now, as is alleged | many months in arrears.” In response to ac invitation asking him to stump New Hampshire, Mr. Dawes regrets “that my engagements make it impossible for me to speak in New Hampshire before election, for a cause never more worthy of support and never dearer to me than now—retrenchment and reform by and through tne republican | party.” Ketrenchment and reform are desir- able consummations, and Mr. Dawes deserves credit for his efforts m this direction. He re- | cently made a little mistake In his calculations | Of $19,000,000, however, which in justice he | ought to correct. It has already done his party | harm, and it isto hoped that the correction ‘when it comes will be as cniversaily circulated as the original error. 2ee- The Edgar Stewart did not go to Cuba yes- terday, but did go down the Chesapeake ona trial trip, returning in the evening. It is a lit- tle singular that this report of her departare for ‘Cuban waters should have been heard at Key ‘West yesterday, the very day of her leaving Baltimore for an experimental trip. This would seem to indicate that the Spanish authorities | areon the alert, and are vigilantly watching the movements of the Stewart. She will leave Baltimore on another trial trip before long, and possibly may not return as soon as she did yes- terday. Benjamin Butier’s star is no longer in the as- cendant! His luck has found a stopping place.— ‘A wit. tar is now deemed by everybody to be in the ascendant. it is believed his great: <st victory was won to-day. tom Post, 23th wit. Benjamin's star must be a shooting star ac- cording to the 7’. The obstructionists do not seem to bave quite made up their minds whether to denounce the answer of Governor Shepherd as too diffuse, or 8s vot covering all the ground. No doubt, how- ever, bat they will roon agree in what way to find fault with it and mdace further delay. ‘Their pian is to protract the investigation antil | the adjournment of Congress. Prx Kusoivtion- tis understood that un- paid teachers in cities, villages, townships, and counties all over the country are getti ' memorials (to be presented by Mr. Hoar) ask- dng that Congress shall forthwith, per resola- tion, compel the payment of their salaries. Caleb Cushing's sledge-hammer blows against Chief Justice Cockburn, of England, are uow | bd. falling where they will do the most good, as | they are being quoted against him by certain | journals in his own country since his late action | im the Tichborne cas. -22e- The notorious Marcellus West, who yelled for the “blood” of the capitalists at the time of the | riots here, now turns up as one of the coadja- | tors of the memorialists against the District | government. We wish the mem’s joy in their acquisition. -<2<2--—____ Dana, of the New York Sun, is trying to get the Tichborne claimant out of the penitentiary ‘to secure him for a Washington correspondent.
