EVENING STAR. Largest Cirealation in the Distriet Beading Matter on Every Page | WASHINGTON CITY; SATURDAY... ~KFebraary 14, 1874. The Lap-stone Calling the Jack-plane ‘It seems to us that the partizans of Mr. Cor- coran, in persisting in setting up comparisons so- clally, andin regard to good citizenship, between bim and Governor Shepherd, are doing their patron doubtful service. The attempt te make social distinctions in this republican country, founded upon wealth or birth, is flunkyish and un-American tthe last degree, and in this in- stance bas, for conspicuous reasone, a particu. larly absurd aspect. The truth is, that both Mr. Corcoran and Governor Shepherd are “men who have risen,” and what is honorable toone in the fact is honorable to both. To in- sist that the one by reason of his wealth is ele- ‘Yated to a social plane, placing his actions be- yond the reach of criticism, and that the other is only “‘an illiterate mechanic,” ‘an apetart” who should be punished for presuming to assert equality with the millionare money-lender, is beth untrue asa matter of fact insulting to the dignity of honorable labor by which they both have risen. Mr. Shepherd is in no tense & more “illiterate mechanic’ than Mr. Corcoran. It will be conceded probably by most people that he bas quite as vigorois a mind as Mr. Corcoran; has had at least equal advantages for a good English education; and has availed himself of those opportunities with equal quickness and application. ff it is crecitable to Mr. Corcoran that he rose from the lap-stone to a prominent position in business and society circles, it is equally credit- sbie to Mr. Shepherd that he rose from the jack- plane to the first place in his native communi- ty. Unless on the ground maintained hereto- | fere by a zealous Knight of St. Crispin that “‘there is nothing like leather,” there seems to be no sound reason why the map who has pushed an aw] should outrank, socially, the man who bas pushed a jack-plane. Mrs. Dahl- gten and other authorities on oficial and social etiquette, sets down the exact order of prece- dence for diplomats, Supreme Justices, sinet officers, Senators, &c., &c., but we have no- —- Seen it asserted that a shoemaker is soci- | ally the superior of carpenter. And, going back to history for light, th: re seems to be no valid foundation forthe claim. So far as Sacred History is concerned, the carpenters seem to have bad rather the best of it in the social scale. While a number of the most conspicuous per- sopages who figure in that history graduated from the carpenter's bench, the shoe-makers of the period seem to have been rather low-down whites, and little er no mention is mae of them, ‘This is probably due to the fact that the cover- ings for the feet in those days were little more than loose sandals, and consequently the trade Of making them was a trivial one, cailing tor no special skill or training. The sandal (trans- tated sboe) worn by the women of those times was, however, a more ornamental affair, and its manufacture, doubtless, required considerable skill; as indicated by Cant. VII, 1: “How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, © prince's @avghter.” The sandal for men a: that day was undoubtedly a clumsy concern, and the un- tying of it was so troublesome that the task was assigned to servants, and became a symbol of servitude: “The lacnet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose.”"—Luke, III, ‘The carry- ing of the shoes of another is also spoken of as a mark of inferiority: “Whose shoes I am not worthy to bear,”"—Matthew, III, 11. In modern times, however, when a handsome, weil-fitting shoe or boot is a desideratum, both for dress and comfort, shoe-making has deservedly taken a foremost rank amongst the trades. ‘The shoe-makers, indeed, claim two patron saint-—Saint Crispin and his brother Grispin- ian, who, according to the legend su:tered mar- tyrdomin England about the end of the 3d century after lives of great ho liness and usefal- ness in missionary work; supporting themselves in their trayels by making shoes, which they fold at a very low price, as they could afford to do, the leather being supplied to them gratis by an angel. Under this saintly tutelage shoe- making attained the distinctive appellation of the “gentle craft,” though we think that this Would hardly justify the claim to superior so- cial position over other mechanics. There is no doubt, however, that shoe-making is noted for the numbgr who have risen from it to emi- mence. This fact has been accounted for by a distinguished authority on the ground that “the sedentary and solitary nature of the craft has an influence in producing a degree of thought- fulness. while the act of hammering his leather is calculated to stimulate the mental vigor of the operative.” On the other hand the carpenter, from the larger and more vigorous nature of his operations, would seem likely todevelop into the more expanded and robust mind. «The car- penter,”’ we are told by an authority of similar | Standing to that quoted above in regard to the shoe-maker, “who has any pride or ambition in his work, requires a sound knowledge of me- | chanical science, especially of all that relates to the Communication of Pressure, the Com- position and Kesolution of Forces, and the Strength of Materials, in order that he may adapt his work to the strain it will be required to resist.” According to this exposition a car- penter-Governor would seem to be about the Fight sort of person to carry on public works On a large acale; having the energy to apply the pressure to Old Fogyism; organize forces; and make his work strong enough to stand the strain from the combined jowers of inertia and pure Cussedness. As regards those who have risen from the two trades in the last century or more, there seems to be a pretty fair equality. Koger Sherman, the revolutionary patriot- statesman, was a shoe- maker; Gifford, the English essaylet, wax a shoe- maker; s0 was Bloomfield, the poet; and Willian Carey, the miswionary. A year or two ago there | Were ag many as fifteen shoemakers in the legis- | lature Of Massachusetts. Vice President Wilson | Prides himself on having worked at the lap- | stone, and President Grant, if not exactly a | shoemaker, tauned the leather to make shoes. On the other hand, James Watt, the inventor Of the steam engine, started as a carpenter; <0 | aia Gregory ith; so did Chantrey, the sculptor; | so did Senator Oglesby; so did Stephen A. Dougias; and Abraham Lincoln, too, was more | of a carpenter in early life than anything else— @ fence-carpenter, at least. So we have estab- dished, we think, to the satisfaction of evary | candid mind, that carpentry and shoemaking | are alike and equally honorable, and that the friends of Gov. Shepherd can claim that he as b &n ex-carpenter is the peer of Mr. Corcoran as | an ¢x- shoemaker. As regards their careers since the one left the lap-stone and the other the Jack-plane, the comparison is quite as favorable to the Man of ‘Whacks—the carpenter, so to speak—and the ‘Man of Wax—if we may be permitted toso desig- nate the shoemaker. The one has made money by building houses, the other by shaving notes. The man who builds houses creates something and adds to the general wealth and prosperi the man who shaves paper does not. The af vantage here is in favor of the ex-carpenter. Mr. Corcoran has provided a magniticen® Cemetery for the dead, where a few hundred select corpses can be eligibly accommodated in wnderdrained earth, under patriarchal oak sand separated from contact with common clay by a stately, brase- mounted iron fence. ‘Mr. Shepherd has built up a city for the liy ‘ng, cleansed and drained it, banished its fever spots and its plague spots, and made it habit. abie and healthful for 120,000 people. Is tie Ddalance of credit in favor of the man who build. Scemetery,or the man who lessens the ne-d Jor cemeteries; the man who provides for a few hundred dead, or the man who cares for one ndred thousand living ? ‘Mx. Corcoran has made noble provision in his * Louise Home” for the comfortable support of Jadies in reduced circumstances, but the num- ber i limited, as well by the conditions of ad- mission as by the capacity of the build- ing—the inmates mast be ‘ gentiewomen”—no ‘widows of shoemakers, carpenters or other me- who car- rics om vast works, public and private, and e' 163 SPPloymeas and gustenance te (hounds | birth. of poor people, without distinction of ‘blood or Mr. Corcoran bag made a superb gift to the | city in bis art gallery, benefaction 60 perma- nent in its character and of such continually increasing importance that it will perpetuate his name with growing honors #0 long as Wash- ington has an existence. And yet this gallery, from its nature and by reason of itsexclusive hours of admission, and the entrance fee, de- signed “to keep out the rabble,” is adapted, Mike the Cemetery and the Home, for the use of a comparatively small number. Is not the man who beautifies and adorns = whole city with parked streets, trees and foun- tains, so that it is a perpetual delight tothe eye of every man, woman or child inthe community, as great a public benefactor as the man who opens a picture gallery for the enjoyment of the privileged few who have the means and the | leisure to avail themselves of the hours when it is open? The comparisons might be carried out to any extent, but our readers will doubtless agree with us that enough bave been drawn to show conclusively the point we made in the start: That the Lapstone should not call the Jack- plane vulgar; and that the Man of Whacks is in all respects the Peer of the Manof Wax, Tas Great Beeap Crors.—The statisti. cal division of the Department of Agriculture makes the loas in corn, in comparison with last year, nearly 200,000,000 bushels, and the gain in wheat 5,004,000 bushels. And it deema the gun more than an equivalent to the loss, the corn crop usually being superabundant. The gen- eral accuracy of the estimates of the statistician appears to be cordially acknowledged by those best acquainted with the movement and con- sumption of agricultural products. The secre- tary of the Milwaukie Chamber of Commerce, Mr. W. J. Langston, in writing of the great di- versity ot opinion as to the extent of increased production of wheat in the west in 1875, states that the department estimates in 1 “proved remarkably accurate,” and that the estimate for 1573 “will be received with a great deal of confidence, and may serve to dispei some prer- alent errors. The cost of advertising the new constitution of Pennsylvania aggregates about $225,000. It appears to have been published in nearly if not quite every paper in the state, and asa rule those haying the least circulation and etand- ing put in, as usual, bills for the largest amounts,—not relatively, but absolutely. In Philadeiphia, for instance, the three daily papers having the largest circulation charged the least of any of the dailies. The Led, ith the largest circulation got only $1,506.40, against $4,672 paid to the Democrat, $5,635.60 to the to the Bulletin, while the y at Harrisburg with only a trifling con- stitueney got away with sz, ‘Twas ever thus es The Winchester Vows coolly appropriates the “Potomac River” poem, original in Ta STAR, and magnifies the theft by omitting the third verse, which had reference to John Brown. There are a number of papers on our list of little OT nouse to us that repay the courtesy of an ex- chance by habitually taking our matter without credit. We propose in future to drop all such acquaintances. seer: - Judge Noah Dav , of New York, who sent Boss Tweed “up,” is occupied with the bill of exception: in the Tweed case, which, with the writ of error, amounts to nearly four thonsand pages of foolscap. It is scarcely probable that even this formidable document wil! be anficient to induce the Judge to change his views of ‘Tweed’s guilt or the fairness of his trial. t Bow turns out that the compositorson tha Louisville Cow rier-Journal struck and quit work onaccount of the lies sent to that paper by its Washington correspondent. They were not willing to risk their chances of future happiness toy putting in type bis trashy falsehoods. Notwithstanding the mild winter, ice ought to be very cheap next summer. Several of the New York ice compauies have made contracts for their supply in Maine, at the low price of an eighth ofa cent a pound on shipboard. —— ‘coe: On the local side will be found some interast- ing reminiscences of the early history of Wash- ington by an old and greatly respected citizen, who will be easily recognized by his initials.
