_ EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8S. NOYES.......Editor, Beading Matter on Every Page WASHINGTON CITY WEDNESDAY February 4, Transfusion of blood for the relief of invalids suffering from exnaustion caused by a lack of the vital Guid has occasionsily been practiced 1m Europe by skillful physicians, and sometimes with signal success. The question now arises whether the drinking of blood will not accom- lish the same result. The Boston Journal mentions the case of a man in a very feeble state or health, who had been for some time at the Butcher: attoir in Brighton for medical treatment, simply drinking a half tumbierfal Of warm blood twice aday. He gained a poand & week while at the abattoir, and is soon to resume his usual business in Boston. Other cases are mentioned. The Journal's informant says there are ten or twelve others there, drinking the blood, all of whom are gaining under this treatment. One gentleman from Boston, a consumptive, so feeble that it was with diffi- culty he could get to this abattoir, is now able to handle an axe skilfully enough to “knock down a bullock.” A lady from Boston, who has been sick six years, stricken with paralysis, is improving wonderfully by this ‘blood cure.” It ws « well-known fact that physicians fre. quently prescribe for convalescents underdone beef, and in some cases the raw material its2it, for the reason that cooking destroys the nutri- tive or life-giving principle of the meat—i. -., the blood. On the principle (which does not always hold good) that if a littie is geod a great deal must be better, the blood-drinking remedy may yet prove one of the most efficacious agents in the cure of a certain class of maladies. A Virginia member of Congress has intro- duced a resolution locking to the timshing of a monument over the remains of Mary, the mother of Washington, which repose in the bur- ial ground near Fredericksburg, Virginia. It seems that the corner-stone of such a monu- ment was laid many years ago with great cere- mony. General Jackson and other distinguished men being present, but that since that time nothing has been done towards building the shaft. It would, perbaps, be better to wait until we complete the monument to the mqm- ory of General Washington before erecting one to his mother. As theoretical monument-build- ers the American people doubtiess excel all others. The alacrity with which we vote moa uments to the memory of the illustrious dead is wortby of all praise, and our failure to erect them of anything but commendation. The way we build, or rather don’t build, monu- ments, reminds one of Mi ber’s manner of paying his debts. He canceled his pecuniary obligations, it will be remembered, by giving fresh I. O. U.’s when pressed by his creditors, and after doing this felt, as he expressed it, that he had “discharged a duty which he owed torociety.”” Let us complete the Washington menument before voting to build any more. ~ -+0-- — Yesterday, in @ passenger railway car, we heard a discussion between two weil dressed, intelligent looking individuals, relative to a disputed point of city improvement, which ied in one of the parties using the knock- down argument: “Well, it has been so for fifty years; why not let it remain so” That is ex- actly what's the matter hereabouts. Old things And old ways are considered good, simply be- cause they are ancient. What we want here to make our city great and prosperous is new life, new energy, new enterprise. Too long have we been contended to tread in the well-beaten track of those who have gone before us. and in doing so we h bi e lost sight of many of the bless- orous action of the 2 Gazette. is exactly what's the matter bere- It is very well for the Ga:-tte to talk “new energy” and ‘‘new enterprise,” but just let some of the progressive citizens of Baltimore undertake to make the city “great and prosperous.” It will find the good-enongh- aeit-was people opposing the march of pro- grees at every step, and villifying those who at- tempt by “fresh and vigorous action” to lift the city out of the mai. So we have found it here in Washington. and we have no reason to believe that the old togies of Baltimore would wage a less relentless war against improve- ments than the few obstructiouists in our midst. about The men having failed to stem the liquor traffic in Massachusetts, the aid of the women bas been invoked and a new system of war- fare is to be carried on against King Alcohol. ‘The women are organizing themselves into “Temperance Leagues,” and at one town in the western part of the state visited all the li- quer saloons, argued with the proprietors and bartencers, and offered prayers at the bars where before bad been known only profanity and tippling. In one case a scout informed the liquor eeller that the “women were coming,” apd be locked bis door in their faces. Not to be defeated so, they began a prayer-meeting upon the sidewalk and doorsteps, and continued it throughout the day. They had a good au- dience bour after hour, and it is needless to say that the whisky seller did not take in any stamps while they occupied the sidewalk. — ‘The threatened expose of bigh government Officials by the New York Tribune is postponed until further notice, not exactlyon account of the weather, but because the documents upon which itwas based were unfortunately found to be forgeries. A good many of the other so- called exposures of the same class would be held upa while, or suppressed altogether, by fair- dealing newspapers if the character of the charges, the responsibility of their authors, and their probable motives, were first carefully in- quired into; and it is worth while for trae jour- malists to consider how far this course would protect public morals and at the same time ele. vate and diguify their own calling. At least, the Tridune owes it to itself, not less than tothe public at large, to expose the forger in this case. = iit it bed this much” -2e0e- ‘The correspondents representing other papers | here telegraph that General Farnsworth tells them that all the necessary advertising for the District government the first year of its existence could have been dove for 3500. This shows that General F. doesn’t know much about the value of space in newspapers; and journalists belittle themselves and degrade their professton in cir- culating bis trash. The ex-Honorable gentle man bad better confine himself to telling the public what he knows about the transportation of cavalry regiments by railroad. That is a subject on which he is able to speak under- standing!y. sees There is probably no city in the United States where buman life is held so cheap as in Cum- berland.—a facet which can hardly fail to seriously interfere with the future growth and Prosperity of the place. People looking out for @ new abiding place will not be willing to take either their families or their capital to a town where human beings are shot down |i dogs, without provocation, and where « mur- derer. instead of getting his just deserts, is Monized and //<ed as if he had performed a most honorable ana heroic act. ———_-«ee-_ Superintendent Kéddle, of the ‘New Vork public schools, tn his last annual report renew his recommendation of last year for the re Sntreduction of the birch and ferrule. The board of education has as yet done nothing with the report of the sub-committee which Teported in favor of corpora! punishment. —__-+e2-- ‘Dr. Shelton McKenzie, who has, in one way nd another, probably written as mucb ro mance as anybody living, is indignant at Chas. Dickens because his story of ‘‘The Seven Poor Travelers” isn’t true. Why don’t the literal- minded doctor berate ali the other story tellers as well? ee winds ‘aire loge the slwage tock well when The bas a uice fitting pair of bids ou if notaing more.— E-. That reminds usof a young lady whounce eaid that all she wanted for her next summer outfit was a lace shaw! and a new hoop skirt. 4 Davis has sailed f: New Orleans for Europe for the benefit of his health, and the expected hostile meeting between him and ex-Senator Foote is “off,” to ase a sporting phrase. The public will now fetch a sigh of rehef to know that it is to be saved the spec- tacle of two choleric old gentlemen popping ay at each other ‘‘in the field of honor,” a0 called.
