Largest Cirenlation i in - Distriet Beading Matter ou — Page | Partics interested in and conversant with the | manutactare of paper, of all grados, have been | prospecting our District and vicinity, and are much pleased with the water privileges found here, and especially the springs on the outskirts Of the city, thus endorsing the ideas of practi- caland experienced persons, who, when the ‘Treasury Department was «bout to sell its Mmagniticent machinery, some four years ago, attempted to imterest our home capitalists in establishing mills on some of these favorable sites. The cost ty the various Departments of the Federal Government in our District for raw or biank paper is perhaps $1,000,000 to $1,500,060 per aunum—not to speak of that consumed by our local government and citizens. All thir, even the) bank-note paper, could as Well be made here as elsewhere; and we sve no Teazon why our own capitalists should not real- ize the direct profits of its manufacture, and the indireet profits of housing, clothing, and feeding the new class of artizans which such an enterprise would introduce. The enterprise could be enlarged, at least, to the exteat of manufacturing the vast number of envelopes used here, out of its own paper. ILis still a great pity that the splendii paper- making machinery alluded to, and w! sold for less than half its real value, was allowed to leave our District. Nevertheless, it is to be hoped that, under the new business inapirations of our District, our people will, if called on by these gentlemen, assist themselves by aasist- ing them. s2e-- = A Test of Faith. Mr. Beecher’s pews were sold in Plymouth chureh, Brooklyn, Tuesday night, and the aflair curiously enough took the shape of a test of faith in Mr. B.'s honesty of purpose and purity of morals, It had been surmised that the recent scandals against him might cause a falling off in the bidding, but the test showe: that the reverse was the case, and, according to the Herald, “the sale was a triumphant vio- dication” of his character. Mr. Beecher was present himself, to see whether the auction test of bis purity would prove him guilty or inno- cent. He prefaced the sale, not by prayer, but by a neat little address in the way of “biz,” in which he said that many reports had been cir- culated about his going to England to preach, but he should only do as his congregation said. He would only go if “pushed over.” After this little reminder that if they did not bid lively he might wander off to fresh woods and pastures new, he gave way tothe auctioneer. The bidding then commenced very lively, the premium for first choice of pews going up (with rental) to $550. Other “lots” went at the same big prices, and Mr. Beecher rubbed his hands gleefully, saying to « reporter, “WAI, it is going better than I expected. What do you think of this fer panic prices?” When the amount of sales was footed up, somebody announced that tae total Fesult was less than last yeas, whereupon Mr. Beecher «looked very much annoyed,” and ex- claimed: “Oh, that can’t be! The prices were Digger than ever.” The list was gone over care- fully by three or four people and the auctionser besides, and the result was finally found to be that the aggregate amount of the sales was $9,450, against $5 imerease of $1 fully vindicated, under the hammer. As recently stated ie Tan STAR, a meeting of the representatives of fire insurance com- panies was lately held in Baltimore to consider | the propriety of asking legislation relative to the sale of illuminating otis. An ordinance has since been introduced in the city council to en- force the provisions of the act of the general assembly of Maryland of 1870, regulating the tale and manufacture of oils for Nominating purposes. It authorizes the fire inspector to make the necessary tests of the oils named in the act, and imposes a penalty of not more than $100, nor less than $10, upon any person for ob- structing him in the execution of this daty. The act of assembly requires all oils or fluids manu- tactured from petroleum or its products, used for illuminating purposes in the state, which sball be manufactured or kept for sale therein, shall be required to stand a teat of 110 degrees Fahrenheit before it shail burn, to be ascer- tained by the instrument adopted by the pe- troleum board of trade. It also provides that in case of accident the person who adulterated the oil may be punished as tor a misdemeanor by fine or imprisonment or both. ————-see- A meeting of the representatives of some of great coal companies of the country held in New York recently for the purpose of organ- izing @ combination which will be able to con- trol prices, has been referred to in Tax Star. ‘The parties participating in the meeting were very reticent their intentions, but the representative of the Philadelphia. and Reading company stated that the coal combi- Ration would be more likely to secure a fair price steadily for the consumer than to intlate prices temporarily for the benefit of the com- panies. He did not believe there would be any material increase in the price during the re- mainder of the winter, and wes of the opinion that the combination would tend directly to Prevent sudden and unreasonable rises in prices at any period of the year. The meeting of the | companies was for various purposes, which he Was not at liberty to disclose—among them a settlement of @ basis for wages to miners. He | did not believe there would be any strike among the miners, for he did not believe their wages would be e reduced. +202. ‘The good people of Boston who have been petting the British republican, Charles Brad- laugh, are horrified to ind that as a moralist he is hardly up to the “Hub” standard, It has been understood that ne was moderately ‘lib- eral” in his ideas, but they were hardly pre- pared to find him operly avowing positions like the following, which appears in his National Secular Almanac, for 174, just issued in Lon. don Secularism may be briefly defined as the science of this life—the philosophy of the pres. ent existence. Secularism isa religion without Superstition. x manioay, the divinity of which is Dumanit; t teaches & man how to li = out depen on & God, and how to die with- out the fear of adevil. In fact ice has not made to asufficient thickness to warrant beginning the work. This looks as if we might have an ice famine next summer unless we resort to artificial measures to obtain it. Between this and spring, however, it is quite likely we may have some very cold weather— cold enough to make an abundance of ice at the north. —__—__-+ee-_____ According to Cuban advices the patriots have achieved another considerable success at Pa. talo Seco. It is @ noticeable circumstance that since the installation of a new president the patriots have exhibited great activity, and are striking the Spanish volunteers at every op- portunity. General Quesada, recently Cuban agent to the United States, now at Key West on his way to Cuba, will probably reassume his position as commander of the troops in the Heid. | | | | | 306.50 last year, making an | So Mr. Beecher has been | | Satural color, re We, the andersten-d, wil! clues oar ri eapec’ establishments = SEV ES O'CLOCK P.M rSacute days exc~pted) from MONDAY, January 6 ty April lst. ¥.
