' EVENING STAR. ~~ CROSBY 8, NOYES. Largest Circulation in the Distriet ° Bending Matter on Every Page, vucifue': ; WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY..........December 30, 1873. ‘Education im Washington. Statistics of instituttons for instruction ont- bia, collected by the Bureau of Education during the present month, show that there has been an increase inthe aggregate attendance Of those institutions, notwithstanding the heavy increase in the attendance of the public schools — during the year. The number of private schools, academies, &c., not, however, in- cluding colleges and universities, in Washing- ton is 116, with an aggregate attendance of 629, showing an increase of about 15 schools over last year, and an increased attendance of about 500. Of these schools 20, with an attend- ance of 2,863, are conducted under Roman Catholic auspices; there are 1% colored nig! schools, (a large increase over last year,) with an aggregate attendance of 399, and 4 colored dey schools, with an attendance ef 109 There are in the city of Washingtou 23 institutions for sceonéary instruction, such as seminarica, ademics, &c., with a total attendance of is proper to explain that probably a of the pu ng Secondary in- majorit stitntion English branches ‘There are 21 private schools (including 6 sec- ondary) in Georgetown, with au aggregate at- ce of S04. There are 3 colored night h atotal attendance of ay school, with 47 p olic schools, with a1 cored There are 25 institutions in the Dist tofa charitable or reformatory character with 2. inmates. Combining the aggregate attendance and we have in round numbers 7 this the number of inmates of charitable and re- formatory institutions who receive instruction, and the total number of students attending co'- | leges, universities, business colleges, &c., ani | @n aggregate of over 9,000 pupils ander instruc- tion ovt ide of public schools is obtained. ‘The tact that notwithstanding the increased | Attendance of the public schools during the year the attendance of private schools has also In- creased during the Fame period, can be ac- counted for only on the suppasition that our pop- ulation is rapidly increasing and that our edu- cational facilities are expanding with our growth. a There is a class o@ professional beggars in Washington who ought to be looked after with some degree of scrutiny. We refer to the boys and girls who go from door to door daily, carry- ing large baskets and soliciting contribations of food. They usually travel in coup!es, or par- ties of three or four, and each one is armed with the inevitable basket. They alternate in ripging door bells, and while one of their num- ber, with a long face, adjusted fur the occasion, is soliciting alms, bis companions near by are executing “Shoo Fly” on the pavement, or en- gaged in skylarking of the most boisterous kind. When all of their basxets are crammed to re- pletion they wend their way up some alley and turn over the proceeds of their begging expe- ditions to their employers, who, in niue cases ont of ten, are too lazy to work, and are wholly supported in idleness during the winter by the contributions referred to. The charitable of our city have quite enough to do in looking after worthy people who are really in need. If they will refuse to longer submit to the shame- jess impositions of these basket beggars they will break up a pernicious practice, lated to encourage not only idleness but vice, its nat- ural offspring. A telegram elsewhere states that the stoamer Virgizius has very thoughtfully settled the complications in regard to het po m by settling herself down amosg the coral beds. She sunk, it seems, im sight of land, despite ali the effortsof the officers and crew of the steamer towing ber to port. It will be remembered that ® coal barge was sunk in the track of the Span- ish war steamer in the New York docks, despite sil the care of the captain of the barge to avoid an accident which effectually prevented the Arapiles from going to sea. These cases seem to illustrate how extreme solicitude to prevent a thing will UTICE.—The CENTER MARK: til be 4 ey om THUBSDAY, January dat) “ ueual.
