The successful experiments of instantaneously lightiiig the street lamps of K street by electric agency are hailed by all who have suffered from the ness of “corporation moonlight nights. they have, on the other hand, revived the objections to the disfigurement of ali our streets by «rial lines of wire suspended on telegraph poles. A MENORIAL TO PRESIDENT GRANT. Naw York, December The survivors of trees which grace our streets. The leading tel egraph companies are even now frequently paz ried where to place the poles. Many still thinly settled streets, but partially planted with grown trees, permit them, however, to jump over from one side of the street to the other and back again, or to turn tn other streets, because the tolisge of a line of healthy growing trees de stroys the insulation and laterferes with the working of the lines, even in cali weather, and more so when the air stirs. Citizent and au- thorities consider it as utterly inadmissible to curtail the symmetrical development of the trees by the process of thinning out or cutting down for the necessities of the wires. but the remedy is at hand by a resort te un derground wires within the limits of the city. Extensive lines of underground wires were laid through Prusma as far back as IS47, but the had to be abandoned, and { am indebted to of- ficial information on the whole subject from Col. Megdam, the director general of the impe rial telegraphy in Berlin, obtained through the kindness of Baron Schioezer, the German am bassador. The unfavorable ‘results obtaived twenty-five years ago were not attributable to the system, as interested parties will have it, but rather to the lack of experience on the qualities of the isolating material, to the then very 'mperfect machines for the manufactare of isolated wires, and tothe undue hurry with which the work on extensive lines was pushed. These old lines consisted of gutta percha coated imply bur: of ttelt and for the energetic measures tal timely rescne and delivery from a sentence to the chain gang or a Spanish prison. The Railroad Strikes, CARD FROM THR BROTHERHOOD OF LOCOMO- TIVE ENGINEERS. Charles Wilson. grand chief engineer of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, has issued a card, in which he says:—" The strike now in operation on the leased lines of the Pennsylvauia Katiroad Company is in direct violation of the rules of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. My advice to e member of the brotherhood that has quit worl on account of the strike is to go to work atonce, and to use every influence in their power to in- duce all persons engaged in the strike to re- sume work, and to desist from any interference with the company's property or men.”” John Ferbe 5 ent of the Ma- chinists and Blacksmiths’ Internatioral Union, has issued orders iustructing the members of that organivation to refrain from interfering With the locomotive engineers in their strike. THE STRIKE To CONTINUE, The striking engineers held a mecting in Co- lumbus, bio, yesterday morning, which was attended by hundred persons. The engi- neers resolved to staud firm in their demand. The brotherhood in Columbus are opposed to resort to violence or force to prevent any per: sons from Tunning their enrines . against injury by mechanical causes, and an outer protecting heavy coat of asphaltum guards the wire against corrosion. A most careful examination of the wires with highly perfected instruments, especially by Siemens’ method, serves to detect the slightest defects causing losses of currents and vouches for anexceptional material. Cables laid twenty years ago, and in use since that time, have lately bsen taken up in Cologne and other places and found intact. ‘The retardation of the current, and speed of transmission, caused by the so-called stat charge, which subterranean wires take to « inuch greater degree than rial wires, cannot come in account for the comparatively short space within a city, and facts have proved that the working jorse’s an‘! similar apparatas is not Impaired for euch limited distances. difficaity of repairi: injaries bas also been urged against the underground wires, but the experience of the German tervice shows that whilst the original investment comes high, the running expenses are found to be quite trifling Test boxes sunk under the pavement of the sidewalks serve to trace any irregularities. Experiments are now in proj in Prussia extending underground lines over thousands of miles, where the cable is alternately brought in commanication with the battery and then with e earth, or where galvanic currents of oppo site direction are used for telegraphing pur- poses, ‘The difficulties of the static charye_ at: rh thérei; reduced to a winimam and the +... = -> seemmeers eld in Ain ny ty of transmission is restored.
