CROSRY 8. NOYES.. Largest Cireulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY............ December 26, 1873. An absurd paragraph is in circulation stating that the Trustees of the Corcoran Art Gallery have delayed the opening of the gallery inorder to have some “imposing ceremonies” and Sgare in them to their personal glory. This is so far from being true, that it is proposed to open the gallery without any formal ceremonies, what- ever; and all who know the quiet, unostenta- tious style of the gentlemen composing the Board of Trustees need not be told that personal display is the last thing they are likely to court. It is probable that an invitation will be extend- | ed to government officials and members of Con- gress to visit tbe gallery on its opening, but | there is to be no imposing formal ceremonies, | and the time of opening has not been delayed | for an instant by any considerations of this | } kind. The only cause of delay, as we have | heretofore stated, bas been in order to get In | position a sufficient number of works of art to make a display that should not appear meager on the walls of the great gallery. For this rea- | son it was desirable to wait for the arrival! of | the extensive purchases made in Europe this | season by Mr. Walters. — Gov. Shepherd has returned from beving deposited in that city the amount of required to meet the interest due on the t securities on the ist of January. The amount to be paid is $550,000. This is the best answer to the shameless slanders circulated by interested parties to the prejudice of the Dts- | trict finances. For months the most unscrupu- | lousand malignant eiforts have been made by these special standerers to depreciate the finan- cial credit of the District, and to cripple the | District government in its efforts to maintain | that credit while carrying on the gigantic ays | tem of improvements that has raised the city | u from the Slough of Despond and made it the admiration of the country. All good citizens will rejoice that these malicious efforts have 89 signally failed, and that tM same energy tha’ | willed and executed the improvements has been | alike successtul in dealing with the financial problem. ——_+<se- Dr. A. W. de Kierck. formerly professor in the gymnasium at Amsterdam, Holland, and who has been traveling in the west investiga- ting the different railroads with a view of re- ¢ porting en his return home as to the desirabili- ty of the capitalists of Holland investing in the bonds of these roads, was introduced to the President on Wednesday last by Gen. Eaton, Commissioner of Education. Dr. de Klerck ex- plained his mission and expressed the opinion that a mixed American and European commis- sion should be appeinted, wnich should have | the matter of railroads under their direction, | and keep the capitalists of the world advised fully as to their merits and demerits. The President thought the plan might be a good one, and expressed the opinion tbat railroads vught not to be built hereaiter until the people have the money to pay for them, without the aid of government. appreciate the wonderfa! n the appearance of lowing is from the ce of the Chicago Candid observers change for the be Washington city. One peculiar feature of this success is the paroling of prisoners. Heretofore, if reports were to be believed, prisoners on both sides were shot. It is possible that the patriots have taken a new departure, and if they have they merit especial | credit, particularly in view of the late Spanish butchery at Santiago de Cuba. It is to be hoped that the good example they have set will be followed by the Spanish volunteers, but this is exceedingly doubtful ce A Pbilaielphia paper of Wednesday last an- nounced that “ Lord Massey” would deliver a lecture on the evening of that day at Horticu!- tural Hall, West Chester, and that he woald discourse on “ His life and public services, in- eluding aristocratic life at Cape May and else- where.” r is something astonishing to coutemp plate.
