Another feature of the pictures is the number of tall sil hats seen in the crowd of spectators, Tue SHORT-TERM SENATOR FROM CALIPOR n1a.—Judge -John S. Hager, who has just been elected to the United States Senate from Cal fornia, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Hen. Fugene Casserly, was the regular democratic nominee for the short term The new Senator ie a native of New Jersey, av’! is now about fifty years of age. After studying Jaw and being admitted to the bar in his nativ: state, he emigrated to California in 15i¥, and entered upon the practice of his profession there with great success. He soon acquired a Prominent position before the public, and in 1854 he was elected judge of the fourth district court for six years. After retiring from the bench, he was elected a member of the state senate. Judge Hager last year visited Europe, and, betore returning to California, was marrie? to & lady belonging to a prominent Catholic family of Missouri. His term in the Senat ewill expire on March 4, 1575, when he will be sac. ceeded by Hon. Newton Booth, an ant! railroad republican. The circumstance that men of op- ite politics have been giected to the Senate y the same legislature shows that theold party lines in California have been obliterated by the new issue on the railroad monopoly question. Mone Jait Birps.—Wesley Burley, colored, was committed to jailon Friday last,’ charged with stealing chickens from Mr. Beckett, living near Bowie. It will be some time before our burly triend will be again charged with doin, “spurder most foul.” Frank Young, colored, was also commiited to jail on Saturday, charged with stealing goods from the store of Mr. Owens in this village. If tne Delaware law of “nine- and-thirty” could be enforced here for these petty offences it would save to the county thon- sands of dollars Yearly. As the regulations now are they will be jed for nearly four months at the hiotel de Kichardson, at an expense to the tax-paver of some $50 each—then arraigned and tried at an additional cost of, say $50 each.— Marlboro’ Gazet SHOOTING AFrRaY iN RICHMOND, VA.—A se- rious shooting aftray occurred on Tuesday in Richmond, Va., between one Owens, the mate of the steamer Old Dominion, and Morris Shee- han, @ stone-cutter. Christmas trees, laden with rich and tempting frait, were yesterday and the evening before to be found in almost every house, and the gleeful shouts of the little ones over the receipt of much-desired toys were to be heard almost everywhere onc might go. The sound of fire-crackers, torpe does, tin horns and whistles, bleating sheet quacking geese and crying dolls proclatmed th. fact that the great feast of the year was bein. duly celebrated. The ritualistic churches hel! niuidnight services on Wednestay, and that hour the streets were full of young people who evidently thonght that going to church a that witehing hour was far more delightty than during the progy hours of dayligat. Nev ertheless, all the churches were largely aticnd ed yesterday. The decorations of many of th places of worship are more beautiful this year than ordinarily. —Next week promises much in the way o gasety. On Monday evening the “Washingtor German Clab” will give a german at Marini’: hall, On Wednesday the marriage of Miss Campbell and Mr. W. Oswald Coariton will take place at 1p. m., at St. Matthew's churea. The reception to take place after the ceremony, will be only for the relatives and immediate friends of the bride and groom. Tharsday being New Year's day, the festivities properly belong ing to that day will be duly enjoyed, and then our gay season par ezecllence will be fairly in- angurated. On the 6th of January the “Bach- clors” give a german at Marini’s, and on the 7th the Marquis and Marquise de Nodilles wil! give their farewell pail. — Lady Thornton and Mias Thornton are both we are glad to hear, recovering trom the recent indisposition from which they have been suf. fering. — The tasteful and admirably designed card- of the cadets or the U.S. Naval Academy are out for their annual ball Jan. 9th. It is, we hear, to be a decidedly fine affair, and the cist of Washington are making preparations to go down to Annapolis to be presen’ “Not War but Business.” Under this head @ writer in the Baltimor: American defends the Pennsylvania Railroad Company from the charge of constantly mak ing @ railroad war upon the Baltimore and Ohio Kailroad Company to the inconvenience of passengers. He says: « It bas been repeatedly stated, and well sub- stantiated, that the Baltimore ‘and Potomac road was built through the instrumentality oi the Penutylyania Railroad Compauy, becaas the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company absolutely and persistently refused to grant fair and reasonable facilities to the travel and business of the former through and south of our city. ‘The last-named company would not sel tickets, or permit them to be sold where it had control, over any of the Pennsylvania lines, ani it assumed the right to say to that organization which had completed a great railroad system to Ba!tinore that beyond this point it shou! in uny shape or manner, extend its f the people. The Pennsylvai not and could not submit to this di caused the new road, at heavy expense, fo b built to Washington, connecting here with it east, North, and West. s road, it was only natural that the should endeavor to make i! and they therefore ran through trains ove om the National Capital to all important points. But they did not stop any trai the Baltimore and Ohio, ‘These were c between New York and Washington Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore and the New Jersey roads, as long as carried passengers enough to pay the expenses of trans. porting them. This, unfortunately, was not very long, and the numberof trains was redacet to one, the night line, which was kept on until the vist inst., when experience had clearly proven that even this one could not secure pas- sengersenough to pay the two companies over Whose roads it ran tor transporting it, and it was discontinued. So far from the Pennsylvania company making any war upon its rival here it always has sold, and does now, sell ticket eck baggage at its effices, Gast of Phila delphia, over the Baltimore and Ohio road, t» Washington and the South and West to’al persons who desire them. ‘This fairness is met by the last named com- peny absolutely refusing to sell tickets at Its of- fives over the Peunsylvania company’s lines ard when it had the monopoly of the Souther: ccmnections a few years ago, it would not sell or permit the sale of tickets over the Pennsyi- Vania roads, even to local stations. So far as the public can percetye, this is not a railroad war on the part of the Pennsylyani+ ny, but a mere malter of b ie dopts is to offer the best possible ac cominodations to the traveling public, wher- ever its lines extend, and thus secure patronage. When it was interfered with last summer, be- tween Washington and New York, it improvised the ‘Air-Line Route,” via York, Pa., and more than held its own against a forced rivalry. Thi~ aster stroke of railroad management 4..49n- strated that there were more wivs than one ot getting north and east from Baltimore, and tha’ no new monopoly ceuld be created on that lin It is hardly necessary, therefore, to announce that no such movement fs to be attempted.” New York Dry Goons Manket.—The week Just closed has been an eventful one in the dry goods trade. ‘The effects of the late panic hay become feit in the shrinkage of values, and some fallures have resulted from that cause, combined with the duliness of trade since the middle ef September. The volume of business durt g the week was moderately active for the season with the manufacturers’ agents, who dis~ tributed to the western jobbers a falr aggregate amount of staple cotton goods, and to the man. ufacturing clothiers a not inconsiderable quan- tity of fancy cassimeres and other woolens. The market for foreign fabrics was character- ized by extreme duliness in nearly all depart ments. There was an improved movement in linens for clothing pur; |, a8 well as house. keeping makes of Irish and Scotch manufac- ture, which were taken with comparative froe- dom from the importers, and the usual holiday demand for laces, embroideries and lawn, linen pac or al handkerchiets was developed.—V. 1 Bulletin. Tae Epwin Forrest Home.—The trustees under the charter granted by the legislature of Pennsylvania for the organization of the bequcst under the will of the late Edwin Forrest, to es- tablish what is known as the “Edwin Forrest Home,” for the benefit of aged and disabled actors and actresses, met in Philadalphia Tues day and organized with W. 8. Stokely chairman. “Forrest Home” is to be located onthe well known estate of the deceased tragedian, “Spring Brook,” two miles from Frankford, sixty acres of which are set apart for the purpose referred to. After the settlement of the affaira of the deceased, including the claim of Mra.
