EVENING STAR. ASHINGTON CITY: Ww THUESDAY........December 16, 1873. | The New York King and its News- ‘The New York Ezpress states that the com- mission to examine the city accounts have dis- covered a large floating debt, in addition to about $115,000,000 of net city. and county debt heretofore reported. The board of aldermen, the Ezpress says, have called on the commis- sioners to report the amount of the floating debt, but without avail. The rumor also has it It has been stated that certain New York newspapers, including the Tribune and Sun, were bought up by — advertising of the cor- rupt ring there to keep mum about its opera. tions, and it wasonly wien tha foaes came out with its disclosures that the frauds were ex- pesed. The same papers are now suspiciously | mem about the present frauds, bat seek to di- vert attention from home affairs by inventing Storics about frauds elsewhere. A New York exebange says “John Dorsey, a wretched, careworn man, about forty-five or fifty years of age, yesterday pleaded guilty in the Special Sessions of stealing abarrel of po- | tatoes. He said he stole the property because | he could not find work to support a starving | family; nevertheless Justice Bixby sentenced | him to the penitentiary for four months.” This suggests au example inthe rule of propertion: | If stealing one barrel of potatoes in New York | is punishable by four months imprisonment, | how long ought Boss Tweed, who stole the value of several bundred thousand barrels of potatoes, | be imprisoned: ‘The atmosphere has lost its lurid hue, and now, instead of having any idea of ‘mounting | barbed steeds to fright the souls of fearful ad- | ¥ versaries,”” we are content to see nothing in Prospect but “‘weak, piping times of peace.” After an enormous amount of bluster on the part of the Havanese and all manner of rebel- lious threats of resistance to the orders of the home government, they came gracefully down | and allowed the Virginius to depart with scarcely a murmar of disapproval. Now, that this nine day’s excitement is over, the next sen- sation is in order. ‘The disgraceful attack upon Senators in the ' Washington column of the New York Tribune of yesterday, attributing their vote in contirma- ‘ tion of Governor Shepherd to interested mo- | tives, affords another evidence that the Tribune |” is carrying out its avowed purpose to ‘get | even” with the Senate for censuring its treaty- stealing correspondents. Mr. Whitelaw Reid | has lectured through the country upon journal- ism, and the desirability of elevating its tone. | We would really advise him to quit preaching for a season, and experiment a little in the way Of practise. ——_____eee--_____ A hand-bill posted about town professing to warn the public against 4 ‘Child Stealer” | abroad here, but whicn is doubtless merely an | advertisement for some forthcoming play or dime novel, has created so much terror amongst the little folks, and parents as well, that many children have been detained from school for the last day or two. The police should see to it that this mischievous hand-bill is torn down, and should take measures to prevent the future | Posting of anything so well calculated for harm. A statement relative to the imports and ex- ports from New York for the past eleyen months shows, excluding specie, a decrease of forty millions in the imports, and a gain of nearly | sixty millions in the exports, or a change of one | hundred millions in the balance of merchandise trade as usually reckoned. The New York authorities are making a sharp raid onthe gamblers, and the latter, finding it too hot for them at hemé, are preparing, the papers say, to make professional tours South | and West. We daresay Major Richards will ‘see that they do not tarry in Washington. = seco. Now thatthe Spaniards have done the right and handsome thing by surrendering the Vir- givius we can afford todo the right thing by making a rigid inquiry into the status of that vessel and her right to carry our flag.
