EVENING STAR. Ae ©... ee CROSBY 5S. HOYES.......mditor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Beading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY... December 16, 1873. The Opening eof the Corceran Art A letter in the Baltimore Sun of this morning complains of the delay in opening the Corcoran Art Gallery. and says the trustces do not ap- selves that the delay has been unavoidable, and that the trustees and the curator, Mr. Mac Leod, are making every effort to forward the work. It must be remembered that this is not an ephemeral or mediocre affair, but the collection is to be permanent, of a high order of merit, and displayed in a building of a size and character to afford fitting room for the gather- ings of years. A few works of art would make @ meagre show in a gallery planned on this grabd scale, and therefore it has been desirable to wait for the recent purchases made in Enrope by Mr. Walter. And, again, it would have been undesirable if nct impracticable to have the gallery open while these art treasures were be- ing received and put in their proper positions. For instance, Portael’s great picture of the “Drouth in Egypt,” has just arrived, and from its size had to be unpacked upon the pavement to-day, preparatory to being moved to the room where it is to be placed. It is scarcely necessary to point out the inter- Tuptions and inconveniences that would have been experienced in moving and placing this valuable pictare, the rooms being filled with spectators. Again, the work of readjusting and transferring, until each work of art is in its proper place and light, is no smallone. In this way it bas been found requisite to fit up a room especially for Power's (ireek Slave. As we learn, the paintings purchased this season in Europe have all reached Washington, and will soon be in place. The purchases for the Statu- ary Hall, including the fine set of casts of the great works of sculpture, ancient and modern, are yetto come, but it will not be necessary to await their arrival before opening the picture gallery, As already said, the very competent officers of the institution are using their best ex- ertions to havethe gallery opened as soon as it can be creditably and with a certain degree of compleieners, ‘The publication by Taz Stag yesterday of the diary of the grave-robber Christian, show- ing the systematic and whelesale style of his operations, created a profound sensation in this community. While it is recognized by all sensible people that the medical fraternity shoul have all proper facilities for the study of | their science, a feeling of indignation was aronred at the wholesale nature of the opera- | tions of the man Christian, who seems to have undertaken to supply all the medical colleges of the countiy from the grave-yards of Wash- ington. It is related that a short time since atelegrim | Was sent from Washington to Hon. James Lyons, of Richmond, Virginia, asking him if he would accept the position of United States Dis. | triet Attorne pateh being addressed “T. Lyon,” was taken to a Richmond lawyer of the. name of Mr. John Lyon. The latter was, of course, somewhat sur- prised at (he question contained in the telegram, but nevertheless promptly responded in the affirmative. iis feelings may be fancied on as- certaing a few hours later that a mistake had been made in the delivery of the telegram. Isn't it rather hard on Architect Mullett to charge him with extravagance in erecting pub- lic butldings in the cities all over the country, when in fact he is merely carrying out the will of the representatives of the people. Another fact must be borne in mind, and that is that it is true economy for the national government to Duild its own houses in a substantial manner and not pay the amount it would cost to build a house for rent in halfadozen years without anything to show for it. The last weekly bulletin of the Patrons of Husbandry, dated the 13th instant, shows that neither the monetary panic nor the war fever bas affected the growth of that organization. ‘There were organized from the Ist to the 13th instant 517 subordinate granges. Should this imerease continue, over 1,060 granges will be organized this month. The total number of granges now in operation is 9,297, with a re- ported membership of 697,275.
