Total, $2 a A Novet Strt.—On Saturday Justice Hughes had before him a novel suit. It appears that | about the 15th of November a colored boy named Anson Perry was arrested in East Wash- ington on the charge of the larceny of bricks, for which he was convicted and sentenced to jail by Judge Snell, of the Police Court. It was claimed by the father of the boy, Elias Perry, that the boy was induced to take the bricks by one Samuel S. Riley, and the tather entered suit against Kiley, claiming £100 damages, and | the case was heard on Saturday—Mr. L. Wil- liamson for the plaintift and E. C. Carrington the defendant. It will be repeated this eve- ning, and no one should fail to see it. The Theater Comique offers such a great va- any one is hard to please who cannot find something to amuse him there. Tho crime which led to the punishment of this prisoner was one wh! has, of late, been not unfrequent—an attempt to defraud ‘an insurance company. His store was burned, and he made claim upon the insur- ers for heavy loss, eweuring that he had a large amount of property in the building. ‘There were grave suspicions that he had set fire to the store, but he was only convicted for the per- ury, of which he was convicted. In sentenc- ing the prisoner the recorder said he had no doubt that he bad committed both arson and perjury, and that he had done both in order to successfully obtain money by fraud. The sen- tence Imposed was to be a penalty correspond- ng to the magnitude of the crime, and was al intended to deter others from thé commission of similar offences. Hence he imposed the longest sentence permitted by the law for the crime of perjury, of which the prisoner bas been convicted Bory Norsery by Maskep Mey.—On Sun- day evening, about 6% o'clock, the house of Henry Duran, a German truck-farmer, on the Washington road, about a mile a half from the city, was entered’ by four white men, who were bess yon by handkerchiefs around their faces, and with revolvers in hand. Duran, who has only one arm, de- nied having any counterfeit money, en, be he had worked hard for what little money he had. One held a revolver to bis head, while the others took his wife into an adjoining apartment and threatened her, until from fright she showed them where the money, the earnings of the year, amounting to $240, was placed, and they possessed theraselves of it and left the house.
