Largest Circalation in the District. Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY..........-..November 7, 1878. | The Cuban Victims, A dispatch received to-day from Havana | states that Gen. W. A. C. Ryan, Gen. Bernabe | Verona, Pedro Cespedes and Jesus Del Sol, who were on board the Virginias, en route to | join the Cuban insurgents, when that vessel | ‘was captured, were tried, condemned and shot | on Tuesday morning last ©n the 2d of Sep- tember last an order wae printed in Tax Star, Purperting to emanate from President Ces- | pedes, and dated Camaguey, Jnly 13, com- manding certain officers connected with the Cuban army to return atonce to Cuba. The cers named were Ramon Cespedes, formerly Cuban minister to the United States; Francisco Agularo, vice-president of the republic of Cabs; W. A. C. Ryan, general and chief of cavalry; B. Verona, brigadier general; Rafael Quesada, colonel of infantry; Michor Aguaro, colonel of infantry; and L. C. Baile: lieutenant colonel and aide-de-camp. The authenticity of this order was denied by a Cuban im one of the New York journals, but Was never contradicted by Gen. Quesada, a present Cuban agent to the | nited States. As | several of the persons named in the order soon afterwards left New York to join the insurgents, and were captured on board the Vir- ginius, it is probable that the order was au- thenic. It is possible that the Pedro Cespedes mentioned in our Havana dispatch was brother to Carlos Manuel Cespedes, president of the Cuba republic. Gen. Ryan, whose form has been familiar in Washington for overa year past, was not yet thirty years of age when he met his death, He undoubtedly held some position in the Cuban army, although this was denied by one of the Cuban factions in this country. From | the fact t@at he was recognized by (ien. Que- | sada, and left for Cuba, as «lid the others of the | party, under his auspices, it is fair to infer that | if he had been derelict his offenses had been condoned by the Cuban authorities. It is | perhaps better for the General's reputation that he should h: met his death in defense of the cause to which it had been charged he was lacking in devotion. Gen. Verona, who was in this city a few weeks since, possessed a pleasing address, and was a gentleman of education. ‘The capture of the Virginius and the execution of these men will be a severe blow to the Cuban cause, and will do much to dishearten — Patriots and their friends. ce-—__ ‘Toppling of the Giants. ’ It is stated that Colonel Thomas A. Scott, first vice president of the Pennsylvania rail- road company, has tendered his resignation. ‘The Philadelphia Leger, however, says it is not supposed that the board willf accept his resig- nation, his services being too important to be | yielded up for any minor course. It is, however, a curious illustration of the precarious tenor of prominent position in the world that he should be thus suddenly placed in a situation to make his abdication a thing to be contemplated. Within a few weeks the country has seen so many of the great magnates of trade and business topple down that scarce any new failure would cause surprise. And yet the men who two short menths ago woula have predicted the fall of Co., the Spragues, Henry Clews, Claflin, Vander- bilt. Drew, and the long line of uppermost names in business circles who have succumbed, would have been considered crazy. The County Schoo! At the meeting of the trustees of county schools held yesterday, it was stated that the bills for fuel furnished to the county schools had not been paid. We are authorized to <ay that the controller placed in the hands of the treasurer of county schools on the 11th of Octo- ber sufficient money (nearly $1,000) to pay all bills for fuel reported by the trustees to be due at that date. On lvecember 16, the people of Pennsylvania are to vote upon the acceptance of the new constitution, just completed by the state convention. a ‘The coal shipments from Cumberland by rail- road and canal for the week which ended the Ist instant were 63,354 tons, which was an in- crease of 10,965 over the corresponding week last year. This increase, it should be remem- bered, is not to be attributed to the efficiency of the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, but to the fact that ince last year the facilities for shipping coal by rail have been enlarged. From the be- ginning of the year upto the Ist instant there | had been shipped from Cumberland 2,199,994 tons, which is an increase of 275,3% tons over the same period in 1572.
