Annie replie Lad never New Yor« 8: Finances EMBARRASSED. The sum of $144,600, being a portion of the canal debt, falls due on the Ist of November next. Under direction of the state legislature, the state officers advertised for bids for a new loan, the proceeds of which were to be used in the payment of the old loan. Contrary to all anticipation, no bids were presented. “This is ubprecedented in the finances of the state, and sbows how disastrously the revulsion through which we are ing has affected business in- terests. Less thane half million of the old bonds were offered in exchange forthe new bonds, leaving about a million and a half dollars to be provided. The controller has no money with which to meet the unexpected demand. Sev- ¢ral millions of doflars are due from the city of New York, and the controller is now in New York endeavoring to obtain the just dues of the state. The remainder of the state is compelled to suffer for these delinquencies of the city of New York. They have paid their taxes, but the metropolis has not, and must now suffer an ad- ditional drain to meet the unlooked-for deti- clency. Witp Fowr THE SUSQUEHANNA.— Gunners report that wild fowl are abundant at this time in the waters of Susquehanna, below Havre de Grace. The wild celery upon which they feed being luxuriant this season, the ducks are in splendid condition. The gunners will commence shooting this game on Monday next, and it is probable that several thousand fowl will be killed on that day alone. Canvass back ducks are quite plenty at that point, and heads, mallards and others of the more com- mon varieties can be seen upon the feeding grounds in thousands. There are twenty-tive or thirty gunners employed in the vicinity of Havre de Grace, a portion of their spoil being sent to New York and Philadelphia, but a considerable part of the game reaches Balti- more, where it is sold to the hotels, restaurants, and in the different markets of the city, at remunerative prices. The Susquehanna gun- ners kill the wild fowl principally from boats, at a distance of from eight to twelve miles below Havre de Grave.—Halto. American, 30th. Tae ALLEN-Hocaw Prize Fieur—/linois Determined that her Soil shall not be Disgraced.— Allen and Hogan, the bruisers, met yesterday in St. Louis, and it is asserted that new articles of agreement were drawn up to fight in about | three weeks at some point in Canada, near De- troit, with the stakes increased to $2,500 aside. ‘This appears to have resulted from the fact that there was no chance to tight in Illinois, owing to the vigilance of the authorities, who, under Governor Beveridge’s instructions, were on the alert in five counties up and down the river from the point where it is said the fight was to come off. The Governor went so as to order one hundred muskets and ammunition to East St. Louis yesterday, to be used in defence of Illinois law if necessary. He had evi: dently been murdered with a club, which was near the body. Joe Bradshaw, a negro, who was seen to enter the tiell in the forenoon, was suspected of the crime and pursued to Paducah, where he was arrested yesterday. With one of them a young git] has reskied for some time. and for what reason we know not, bat the neighbors have suspected that Berry was treat- ing her as a mistress. Suspicions of foul play rapidly gained credence. and all became greatly, in: censed. A mob collected, the rope was placed about Berry's neck after the most approved style of a professional hangman, and he was asked if he bad anything to say. ‘He protested his innocence, but it availed him nothing. He was then drawn up by the neck three times, when a sense oes prevailed, and the vic- tim wasallowed todepart. Tue Destruction or THE OLD OPERA OF Panis.—The news of the total destruction b: fire of the old opera of Paris, better known as |’ Opera Francais, was received with regret by the French residents of this country. It was there it Kachel, Cravelli, Ristori, Nilsson, and Patti madethetrd:iuis. It was also the sceno of the French carnival, the bal «'opera, which for nearly @ century has rivalled the’ world- famed Carnival of Rome. It was the second largest theater in Paris, and could seat 3,000 persons. Some of the most noted plays of the century were first produced there. [ts audi- ence parlor was hung around with valuable portraits and pictures. It was also the scene of twoattempts onthe life ot Napoleon ill. Its destruction will entail an immense loss, as there were always stored in its great galleries a large quantity of scenery, which was painted and manufactured by special artists employed on the prem: It is said that it contained a wardrobe sufficient for 30,000 persons, Tar PwitapetrHia Mint.—Gold to the value of $9,540,000 has been coined at the United States mint in Philadelphia during the month, and by the close of the week it will reach ten ot eleven millions. ‘This apparent large coinage is not intended for the resumption of specie pay- ments, but for the ordinary purposes of tho government. While little or nv silver has been coined, arrangements are being made to com- mence operations in that direction in afew days. There is almost dally a repetition of | slight shocks. In some places the earth has sunk: in others places lakes haye termed where there was no sign formerly of water, and along the banks of the Columbia river large masses of rocks have become detached from the banks and tumbled into the river, causing it to cut new channels. The seat of the earthjuake seems to be just below the lake and fifteen or twenty miles from the Columbia. The Indians say the noise resembles thundes, and is of al- most daily occurrence, and that atone time there was an issue of salt water from a fissure in the earth that covered the ground knee dezp, which, too, was charged with a most horrid smell. Harr T Betrer THAN No Time.—The typographical union of New York will use its intluence to persuade all employers throughout the city not to discharge their operatives, but rather to reduce the wages of all, or put them on short time. This plan, they think, would prevent much suffering, which can in no other way be avoided. The same men will advise all their confreres to assist the employers by will- ingly working a little longer for the old wages or accept a reduction ot pay. This is no time, t the | they think, for employers and employed to be at war. The panic is a calamity to all, the rich as well as the poor, and they contend that all ought to help owe another to weather it through. The physi- cian thinks that there was corrosive sub- lmate in the powder. The circumstance de- rives additional interest from the fact that the Rev. Mr. Mann, of Raleigh, N. C., whose daugh- ters were arrested on a charge of having poison- him, and were honorably discharged, died trom corrosive sublimate taken in a seidlitz powder. 87 The Mississi pe house of representatives has passed the bill postponing the election by a vote of 55 to 3s.
