Tho failure of & New York house having been antloipated, did not cause s great sensation, although canvassed with interest in its bearings upon tho fate of Sprague, The ability and dispo- sition of the oity gnni‘; to help them through, i thelroport of the Committoo s satisfactory, is undoubted, We hicar of no house that is likely to go down with this disastor. ‘Che Sprague pa- in por hold largely by banks, aud, ox- copt In three Bprag banks, in linos that are enfely within tho moans of tho lustitutions, “The cotton and other supplios have beon generally bought from strong houses, and their paper, which has been bought by bro- kers, i lannly n tho handa of speoulative mon, who, tomptoed by a high rate, took tho risk aud can moot the lods, whioh, in many cases, is cov- erad by proviona proofu on the same risks. ‘I'he Commissionors appolnted to make an ox- amination of thd Fr n Institution for Sav- ings, report the whole amount of labilities at $2,810,728, Ths resourcos aro; Bank stook, 103,000 ¢ $208,000; mortgages on ronl outato; 81,601,248; loans on good collatorals, 987,700 ; cash, 2,280 ; loans” on ersonat soourily, $824,600, . of 'whioh , tho pragucs have &57.000 Even if the Bpragues should pro¥e worthless, the bask would still bo ablo 1o pay 70 per cent, The bank will noither rocolvo nor pay doposits for sho prosent, bub will probably resume business undor a now man- agemont. 3 Tho fuvostigation into The Oranston Bavings Bankg s not yot comploted, but ia undoratood fo result in o loss entisfnctory oxhibit, -It is underntood that all ,the banks have como into an nerangemout for guarantceing to tho ox- tont of 8 por cont upon tholr capital the doposits of the Mrst Nntional, Bocond Natlonal, and Globo Natlonal Banks.
