October 29, ‘We stated yesterday that the total number ot | Grar ges of the Order of the Patrons of Hasban- diy in operation om the 25th imstant was 1,530. Of this number but /01 are located im the north- | ern states, while the western states have 5,001, or nearly two-thirds of the whole sumber, and | the southern states 2,478, cr about om the whole number. The work of organizing grang:s in the south soon follow 4 until new that sec~ tion is steadily gaining on taewest, and promises in a short time to equal it tm the mumber of its “grangers.”” It is asserted by high oficials of the Order that the gramges average © member- ship of 75 each, and if this be correct they now aggregate a membership of 538,75. Tho same Officials also expect that 3,000 more subordinate g anges will be organized by the ist of Jamuary next, in which case the Order will have a total embership (on the basis of 75 to each grange) Of 793,500, oF considerably over three-quarters of a million. OF the total number of subordimate gtanges in operation (7,539), over 6,000 have been organized sinee January 1, 1873. ‘The New York election on the 4th proximo is for state officers, judges of the supreme, sups- rior, and marine courts, members of both branches of the legislature, and county officers. ‘There are four state tickets in the field—repa! can, democratic, liberal republican and prob bition. With the exception of the candidates for controller and inspector of state prisons, the liberal republican is the same as the democratic ticket. The republican ticket is headed by Francis S. Thayer for secretary of state, the democratic titket by Deidrich Willers, jr., and the prohibition ticket by Dwight Williams. The Congrersional vacancy im the sixth district, caused by the death of Representative Brooks, will be filled at the coming election. The Tam- many hall eandidate is S.S., better known as “Sunset,” Cox, who is also indorsed by the liberaj republicans, and the Apolie hall and re- publican nominee, Jalius Wadsworth. The complaint was dismissed on the ground that the eity is not responsible for the actions of the board of health, the latter under the present laws being a separate and distinct department by iwelf. ———S For soms time past the conservative journals Of Virginia Bave been printing appeals to the fair sex to use their inflaeace with the voters in bebalf of Gen. The Fredericksburg Star, however, caps the climax when it says: «Wife, if your husband is indifferent to the great issues involved in this canvass, make the domicile too warm on the 4th of November for the indwelling of such a monster.” ee 800 eee Almost evérything is coming down in price except coal. The weekly statement of the trade, published im yesterday's Sta shows that prices are about as before, and this, too, in the face of steady additions to suppiics, with a not very active demand.
