EVENING STAR. = CROSBY 5. NOTES Largest Circulation in the Distriet —— WASHINGTON CITY ome | WEDNISDAY... October 29, ‘We stated yesterday that the total number ot | Grar ges of the Order of the Patrons of Hasban- diy in operation om the 25th imstant was 1,530. Of this number but /01 are located im the north- | ern states, while the western states have 5,001, or nearly two-thirds of the whole sumber, and | the southern states 2,478, cr about om the whole number. Springing ap in the west, the Order for some time expandel most rapid y in that section. The work of organizing grang:s in the south soon follow 4 until new that sec~ tion is steadily gaining on taewest, and promises in a short time to equal it tm the mumber of its “grangers.”” It is asserted by high oficials of the Order that the gramges average © member- ship of 75 each, and if this be correct they now aggregate a membership of 538,75. Tho same Officials also expect that 3,000 more subordinate g anges will be organized by the ist of Jamuary next, in which case the Order will have a total embership (on the basis of 75 to each grange) Of 793,500, oF considerably over three-quarters of a million. OF the total number of subordimate gtanges in operation (7,539), over 6,000 have been organized sinee January 1, 1873. ‘The New York election on the 4th proximo is for state officers, judges of the supreme, sups- rior, and marine courts, members of both branches of the legislature, and county officers. ‘There are four state tickets in the field—repa! can, democratic, liberal republican and prob bition. With the exception of the candidates for controller and inspector of state prisons, the liberal republican is the same as the democratic ticket. The republican ticket is headed by Francis S. Thayer for secretary of state, the democratic titket by Deidrich Willers, jr., and the prohibition ticket by Dwight Williams. The Congrersional vacancy im the sixth district, caused by the death of Representative Brooks, will be filled at the coming election. The Tam- many hall eandidate is S.S., better known as “Sunset,” Cox, who is also indorsed by the liberaj republicans, and the Apolie hall and re- publican nominee, Jalius Wadsworth. Among the republicam nominees for the assombly is Hamilton Fish, jr., som of the preseat Secretary of State. —__—_--+ee-—_____ The admirers of the manly art of asticutfs meet with so many little annoying drawbacks in carrying ont their arrangements for pummel- ing mills that one would think they would — up their peculiar diversion im disgust. prize ring, which was once patrenized by = tlemen, (that was long since, im “‘the good old times,””} has been abjured by almost every de- cent sporting man, om account of the trickery and fraud practised im almost every pugilistic contest, and because of the orowds of thieves and pickpockets invariably om hand on such eccasions. Asis usually the case, bad faith is ebarged in the conduct of the late Allen-Hogan “excursion.” The captaim of the steamer as- serts that the wind blew him ashore at Hast St. Louis, where the ‘excursionists” fell an easy prey to the police, but the Alleu men denoance the proceeding as a ‘‘put-up job” in the inter- est of Hogan. Unfortanately the prinel; were not on the boat at the time of the seizure, aud consequently it is possible that the braising Batch may yet take pl ‘The popular vote cast in the late Ohio elec- tion for Governor was thus divided: For Allen, democrat, 214,403, Noyes, republican, 213,817; | Collins, hberal, Stewart, temperance, | 448,481; Allon over | ; whole vote cast, S. The vote of Ohio fur Secretary of State last year was: For Wilson, republic 205,900, Wiley, democrat, 251,740; republican 52,083; decrease in democratic vot: 3T,A7T; late October vote short of last year’s, | 89,260. These figures show the insiguiticance of | the liberal party, and the New York M-rald | pointedly remarks that the election going by defanit upon a vote less than @ full vote by nearly ninety thousand, signifies nothing as in- dicating the strength of either of the two great parties in the sta s2oe- Our most active and sagacious business men, t will be seen by our advertising columns, are promptly taking advantage of the reduced prices in the wholesale markets to replenish their stocks and give their customers the bemeait of the lower prices. They very sensibly, too, annonce their reduction of prices through the advertising col- umns of Tas Stan, which goes to every family in the District, amd is thus the most valuable advertisit Liam to be found. se ser ‘There was a trial in New Yor* om Monday before Judge Van Brunt, holding sup: court, circuit, in which a father sought to recover $10,000 damages against the city o1 account of his child, vaccinated by a surgeon of the board of health, being inoculated with scrofaia. The complaint was dismissed on the ground that the eity is not responsible for the actions of the board of health, the latter under the present laws being a separate and distinct department by iwelf. ———S For soms time past the conservative journals Of Virginia Bave been printing appeals to the fair sex to use their inflaeace with the voters in bebalf of Gen. Kemper. Some of the papers have gone so fa «8 to sk the young ladies to “cut dead” their lovers if the latter do not do their duty at the polls. The Fredericksburg Star, however, caps the climax when it says: «Wife, if your husband is indifferent to the great issues involved in this canvass, make the domicile too warm on the 4th of November for the indwelling of such a monster.” ee 800 eee Almost evérything is coming down in price except coal. The weekly statement of the trade, published im yesterday's Sta shows that prices are about as before, and this, too, in the face of steady additions to suppiics, with a not very active demand. The New York Express, therefore, has grounds for its opinion that, strong as the monopoly is, coal, as well as other things, will have to coms to “hard paa.” Only two more days after to-day remain in which tax-payers can avail themsely@Pof the six abd three-quarters per cent. dedaction from moze "to mont at pe, aN jetober Sisi, fal order of ee es OakEY PARKS.
