EVENING STAR. CROSBY 8. NOYES....... Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY. eS, 1873. “Annexion”™ or “Annexation?” The Hud and some of its spokes voted yester- day upon the question of annexation, and the result is that Charlestown, Brighton and West Roxbury are to be added to Boston; Brookline alone voting no. Incidental to the debate apon the question, the point was raised by some of the wise men of the Hub as to whether “‘an- nexion” or “‘annexation” was the proper term to use. Whittier and Sumner favored “an- nexion,’’ on the ground that it was the shorter and simpler word. By this union the localities named become ts of a vast metropolis, ranking second only to New York and Philadelphia, and arival ofthe last. Of the towns and cities merged in Boston, Charlestown is the smallest in area and largest im population, containing some 125 acres, in- cluding streets, and 25,323 inhabitants im 1570, West Koxbury is the largest in area, (nearly 000 acres.) and second in population, having 8,653 in 1570. Brighton bas 2,400 acres and 4,957 inhabitants. The extent of Boston as enlarged will be somethixg more than 19,000 acres, and the population about % The area of the metropolis of London is 75,000 acres, of New York 14, Philadelphia 82,500. But Bos- ton will not be content with scooping up Charles- town, West Roxbury and Brighton, but is al- ready moving for the nexion” of twelve other neighboring cities and towns, by which she will bave an acreage of 55,000 and a pepu- lation of more than 425,000. OF By the tone of the Berlin journals, it is evi- Gent that Germany is watching with close in- terest the movement in France in behalf of a monarchy. It is not disguised that the eleva- tion of Count de Chambord to the throne of France would be looked upon as a virtual declaration of war against Germany. A letter of M. Laboulaye to his constitutents gives an intelligent view of the French situa- tion. He estimates that there {sa small ma- jority in the Assembly of all the elements op- posed to a republic, though he believes the country is republican. The monarchists who favor the elevation of Count Chambord to the throne, desire a constitutional ‘monarchy after the manner of Louis Philippe, or Leopold of Belgium, but he seems inclined to insist upon Tuling by the divine right of Kings, and with- out apy regard to popular sovereignty. M. Laboulaye fears that if he should appear to accept the terms of the constitutional monarch- ists It would be a false pledge, and that he would throw off the obligations on gaining power, seduced by the same sophisms in regard to the inability of a King to limit kingly rights, that led Charles X to commit perjury. M. Labou- laye believes that in other countries a mon- arcby can give as much liberty asa republic; but the French democracy will not accommo- date itself long to a royalty, and he therefore desires to spare bis country from another revo- lution. What France wants, he says, is full | liberty, and security guaranteed by just laws. | The republic calls everybody to the service of | the country; the monarchy would be the reign j Of @ party. | ——_-.ee--—__ Wall street continues quiet, the Stock Ex- change being prices tor prime ii with a dull exceedingly dull, with vaectaing Money Tules at good rat } aper. VENABGE is hereby an- Pounced as the regular Repablican candidate An interesting question, particularly for those who would regulate, or attempt to regulate, the eating and drinking of the community by legal enactments, is to be discussed at the fourth | annual session of the American Association for | the Cure of Inebriates, which commences this | week in New York city. The physicians and “laity” who attend these meetings are fully convinced that the cause that leads to the exces- | sive use of alcoholic or opium stimulants is a veritable physical disease, and advocate this | theory. The object of their meetings annually | is to obtain more light and experience on the | subject. They are a unit in favor of the great utility of mebriate asylums, which shows their belief, after experience, in the doctrine that the love of alcohol and opium is a disease, to be cured by proper treatment. If this is settled in the affirmative, the question arises whether those not subject to the disease are to be restrained, or only those afflicted with It, who are comparably few in number. Keformed drunkards, it is said, make the most earnest temperance advocates, which is accounted for by their judging others by their own experience, which is natural, but does not always lead to correct conclusions. The temperance reform accomplishes most good when it contines itself to the same agencies used to propagate the great truths of Christianity—precept and ex- ample. Christians or temperance men, made #0 by law, do not amount to much, eee Hadn't the New York papers, which také such great interest in the monetary condition of the District government, better devote a little Of their space to te the financial Policy of their own “reformed” city government. According to the controlier’s figuring, the increase in the city debt since January 1 last, or in nine months, is within a fraction of twenty million dollars; and the Herald says: “There is reason to believe that this statement does not show the real indebtedness of the city. It issaid that there are claims against the treasury, laid aside by the controller and not taken into account, ‘Smounting to several million dollars, and these should be added to our indebtedness, for they are not the old fradulent claims, but debts which must eventually be paid with interest and Probably with costs.” — Married disciplegof Woodhull, who, previous to taking up with their new affinities, were wont to repair to that wicked city, Chicago, where marital bonds were loosened with se- erecy and dispatch, will now have to seek easy divorces in some other place. Chicago takes a new departure. In the superior court of that “city, Judge Gory bas made an order refusing to ‘permit references of suits for divorce to a mas- ter in chancery, and announced that hereafter all such suits must be tried in open court. ——__<ee— ‘The musical event of Monday night in New York was the debut of Tamberlik, the once famous old-world tenor, who years ago in Lon- don used to rouse the audience to wild enthu- siasm. But like his rival, Mario, his voice has deteriorated greatly, though he has not fallen to the same degree of incapacity as the latter. Enough of the finer qualities of his voice remain to make him a pretty fair card of attraction to be put forward by managers. —_——_-2ee--—___—. ‘The Springfield Republican, albeit unused to overpraise of Government officials, can’t see the display of “centralization” that shocks some journals in the act of Secretary Robeson in carrying off the Buddington party to Wash- ington to get their story from their own lips. ‘The Kepwdiican thinks it is only the ordinary precaution of @ coroner in dealing with the UWstimony, if any crime has been committed. ——\{__—_-<22- The New York liberal state convention meets at Elmira to-day, and the democrats having decided to do witbout them, there is some curi- sity to know hat they are going to do about Like Daniel Webster, they seem to have tm eowhere .” © anit on passed safely over Heill- The Graphic bat. gate and landed in Canaan. = = “PION, MT RAL eeu sth al _ "Wesson Tiigcy aim — fear trtas ae fee ; pata requested 7 D streets southweat, rei Lo Sse Faloat moms ids Octeber bs sharp, in ie: om.
