John Long, a desperado, well known in this city, and who lives in McLe- more’s cave, Walker county, Georgia, passed by Mr. William Taylor's farm, who lives near Allen's springs, in Dade county. He (Long) called to Mr. Taylor's son, saying, “Pick a good watermelon and I'll help you cat itas I goon back.” Ashe passed back, apparently on his way home, young Taylor had the meion, and young man, his father and Long satdown in the edge of a patch of woods and were quietly eat- ing it, when suddenly Long pulled & pistol from his breast pocket and shot Wm. Taylor, jr, dead, and turned to shoot his tather, but the latter had placed a tree between him and his wonld-be-morderer. Long then fired what shots he had left at Taylor, but none took effect, and fled.
