While passing throngh the narrow channel we observe: the water receding from its usual level, reaching a point at least twenty inches below, its greatest depression being about amidships, caused, I presume, by the displacement of water by the boat and pad die wheels. A few heifers were standing in the water, and chewing the cud of contentment, as the boat passed. Suddenly one of them ob served the shallowness of the water, soon after the fact that none existed wh was betore upto her knees. She uncasily moved around, and placed her nose to the muddy bot tom. It will be remembered that this little vessel was constracted at the falls to carry venturesome people into the very SPRAY AND SEETHING FOAM at their base, and frequently ventured so close that a portion of the boat was hidden by the mist from the sight of those on shore. The speculation proved a losing one, and she was sold, conditioned upon her safe delivery at Lewiston. Robinson, who, by his rescue of a number of persons from death and his perilous fests above the falls has acquired a national fame, was employed to navigate the vessel, which he did safely, having passed over a por- tion of the distance at the rate of twenty-five THE RUTLAND MARBLE QUARRIES. From Lewiston to Toronto is a pleasant four hours’ ride across the lake. Approaching the wharf, we observed a handsome man with mut- ton chop whiskers, in a blue cloth uniform, with a helmet-shaped hat, something like those worn by the Prussian army, surmounted by a small plume; his sleeves and shoulders orna- mented; chin-strap down, and with a com- manding military air. We wondered who he could be, and concluded he must be an im portant custom-house officer, and were con firmed in this belief by our impression that offi cers of the British civil service are uniformed. We were content in our wisdom, until he tarned around, when what did we see but the familiar baton! Hewasa policeman!
