EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5S. NOYES..... Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY August 26, 1873. «Arkansas or Arkansaw?” ‘The Daily Chronicle is publishing, on this question, a “‘paper” in three numbers, from the pen of Dr. Thomas Foster, the successor to Schoolecraft's old historiographer desk in the Indian Burean. It is historically, and in an antiquarian way, quite interesting, but some- what long for a newspaper article. It used, in the olden time, to be one of the standing jokes of the U. S. Senate chamber, that one Senator from the very state whose name isin dispute siways called it Ar-kan-sas, while the other always spoke of it as Arkan-saw; of which peculiarity Stephen A. Douglass sometimes availed himself in debate to bring a dignified smile upon the countenance of members by gravely and sonorously addressing one (Sebas- tian,) as ‘the Honorable Senator from Arkan- we," and the other, (Jobnson,) in as grave but more flattened voice, as ‘the Honorable Senator from Arkansas."’ In this connection, we recall to mind the old legend of lawyer John Long’s sign to attract customers. ««Jobn Long of Arkansaw; The tallest man that ever you saw.” And its (oo tall variation by John's too short enemies: “John Long, Attorney at Law, The man that waded the Arkansaw!” Besides, who has not heard of the “Arkan- saw Traveller?” Whoever heard of the “Ar- kansas Traveller?” We think Dr. Foster is in a fair way to estab- lish that the earliest style of writing the name of tribe, river and state was with a terminal ak; that the afterwards added ‘‘s” in the Freach mode of spelling it, was sometimes to indicate the plural, but that generally the said was entirely silent, its use at the end of the name having only the effect of broadening the sound Of the previous vowel ai! Also itis a fact that the masses of the people of the state give its mame no oth:r than the broadest terminal intonation in aw: in which usage we think they have a potential right to demand all outsiders should concur; and it would be better also to drop the final ‘“‘s” alike in sounding and in writing and printing the name—perhaps adding «*w” instead when putting the name o on paper. — +02. is the Earth Drying Up Up? According to the scientists, the moon hag no animal or vegetable life, having passed througlt the period of the cooling process sooner than the earth, because of its being a smaller body. As a part of the same process by which the moon passed from the condition of life and fer- tility the water and atmosphere upon its sur- face were absorbed in its body. Now a Mrs: George Hauk, of Dayton, comes forward with a scientific treatise, (received at the Smithsonian Institution,) in which she advances the theory that the permanent conversion into solid forms of the aqueous portion of the earth’s surface is going on with alarming rapidity. ‘The treatise holds that from a knowledge of the incessant and immense deposits beneath the sa, face of the waters, there should be, if the quan: ‘ty of water remained constant, a general > of water surface, and slow but certain or Water upon land. The great pre- Ponderance o ‘ts, however, goes to prove that the land su, t@e8 have actually gained upon the waters, a:, 20Wgh there are limited areas where the aca is x,“ to be encroaching, as upon the coasts of Grey nt and Norway, And the wash of clitts upon so, *° @*Posed ocean shores. Since the beginning of the tertiary Tid the ary land in the northern hemisphere u. ** °°" constantly on the increase. The raised ben. '** and water lines of Nerway, Sweden, Franc. Italy, Greece; the advance of land around the entire borders of the Mediterranean sea, the | pe Sgpscms jong — Of all the deltas of © world; the grand pages of the great stone book, spread out upon every continent, bear witness in unmistakable char- ters to the increase of land surface. On the othe’ hand scientists of such standing as Sir Charle: Lyen, Darwin, Liebuitz, and Others, encom:age us to hope that our water Supply is not saffering appreciable diminution, ‘And that the physical changes referred to are due to the sinking down of the ocean bed by which the amount of gepression must exceed that of elevation. Asinany event our current water supply is certain to last some millions of years, we need not fret about the matter at present. The watering-pot of Jupiter Pluvias seems to be rather over fall thisseason, in fact. Judge Holt shows in this morning's Chronicle by « cloud of witnesses—Seeretary ine Secretary Stanton and ex-Secretary Seward, Hon. John A. Bingham, ex-Attorney Speed, ex-Senator Harlan, Rev. Dr. Butler, Gen. R. D. Mussey, and others—that the charge that he withheld from President Johnson the fact that the court that tried the assassinsof Lin- coln joined in arecommendation for acommuta- tion of the death sentence in the case of Mrs. Sur- Fatt is untrue. It is shown conclusively that, whether right or wrong in the matter, President Johnson signed the death warrant of Mrs. Sur- Fatt with this petition of the court before him, and after a full discussion of the question of commutation bad been made in cabinet and de- * eided in the negative. Jobnson, fearing that his action in the matter might effect his aspirations for a new tenure of office in Tennessee, has endeavored to convey the impression that the petition never reached him, but this unworthy subterfuge on his part is now very ery effectually, exposed. — This weeks’ political conventions are, the national temperance convention at Saratoga Springs, N. Y., to-day, and the Wisconsin re- publican state convention, (at Madison,) the Mississippi republican state convention, (at Jackson,) and the Pennsylvania democratic State convention, (at Wilkesbarr,) all three of which meet to-morrow. The following state conventions meet next month: Texas demo- cratic, at Austin, and Massachusetts demo- cratic, Worcester, on the 3d; Massachusetts re- publican, Worcester, on the 10th; Maryland re- | northwest. publican, at Frederick, on the 12th; Mississippi democratic, at Meriden, on the 17th; New York republican, at Utica; publican, democratic, at St. Paul; allon the 2ith. The New York colored state convention, without distinction of party, will meet at New York city, October 2, adjourned over from the recent meeting at Saratoga Springs. - ts The recent destructive fire In Belfast, Me., reached the dwellings of the poor in that city, and there is mach suffering in consequence.
