EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. ———— ee WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY... ---Angust 21, 1873. ———=—" Philadelphia Excited. Mr. Jobn Bigelo statements that Phila- elpbia is the hottest place on the continent, and therefore unfit to have a centennial, has ‘Stirred up the Philadelphia hive fearfully. The Gignified United States Gazette says the state- ment is unsupported by any attempt at proof, a simple denial of the assertion is all that 4s required. The Age says it’s a federal lie. ‘The Press says that Philadelphia is ranked high in the scale of health by vital statisticians, and that cases of sunstroke and summer dis- eases are much more rare there than in other cities. The Bulletin says that Philadelphia is the healthiest city on the globe, John Bigelow to the contrary notwithstanding. ‘The Star says that Philadelphia is one of the best and coolest places on the continent, and just the place for the grand centennial. Its population is spread over a iarge area; cool breezes from the Atlantic sweep over it daily end almost constantly, and it is yet far enongh away from the ocean to be exempt from damp sirand chilling winds. The Ledger says that the large number of dwelling houses and great smount of breathing space in proportion to the on make Philadelphia a most favorable for the great exhibition. The Inquirer says that no cooler point could be found for the hundreds of thousands who will visit the great exhibition between April and October, 1576. The Record says that Philadelphia is not only cool but cleanly, and 1s therefore just the place for the centennial. The Telegram says that Phil- adelphia is exceedingly cool, has abundance of water and good ventilation, and is therefore the Place of places for the centennial. The Day says of course Philadelphia is the best place for the centennial. Finally, Dr. Trall, who bas the health of Philadelphia specially in charge, says that Mr. Bigelow is a!l wrong about the hot Fourth of Jaly days im Philadelphia. He triumphantly declares he has known “sey- eral Fourth ef July days, within twenty years, 80 cool, in Philadelphia, that numerous enter- prising individuals who had made extensive Preparations in the line of soda water, root beer, ice cream, lemonade, and other anti- phlogistics, realized more loss than profit. On several occasions woolen garments were neces- sary, and in one instance overcoats were deci- edly agreeable.” After this who shall say that Philadelphia is not a fit place for the centennial. The Pennsylvania coal combination are stil) giving out through the press their intention to raise anthracite coal yet higher im September and October, althongh the increase over last yenr’s prices is a dollar per ton or more. There iss probability that this grasping ring which, since 1871, has stepped into Schuylkill county with £30,000,000 and bought up all the coal mines and lands it could lay its hands on, may 0 @ little too far in its conspiracy, to force up the rates of one of the necessaries of life. Strong- er combinations have succumbed to popular in- dignation ere this, and already there are inti- mations of a demand for legislation by way of | fata acheck on the monopolist The New York Tribune urges the Pennsylvania Legislature, as it possesees the power, to revoke the charter of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron company, as the privileges conferred upon them are palpably being used, not only to the injury of citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsyl- nia, but to the manifest detriment of millions of the people of the United States. -20-- The New York Tritune draws the lesson from the Wawaset disaster that people should learn to swim, and also train themselves to an ordi- Bary amount of common-sense and self-con- trol. It is pitiable to think that at the first threat of peril we should herd together, fright- ened and senseless as scared sheep, and rush headlong into the jaws of death. The victims of this catastrophe, we are told, had neither the requisite coolness nor knowledge, and this is the point to be urged. Here were fifty people @rowned for the lack of knowing how to swim, The defeat of the British government in the Greenwieb election seems to have been under- rated on this side ot the water. According to leading English papers it is one of the most im- portant events of the year in connection with bos politics. The London Times declared, e day after the election, that it was clear the “ rps was discredited throughout Eng- land.” The Pall Mall Gacette says that Mr. Gladstone “remains in office, though not in power.” Since then bis cabinet has been torn to pieces by internal dissensions, and it would appear that its bold upon power is exceedingly precarious. Mr. Gladstone, however proposes to go before the country on a new measure—the extension of the franchise to the agricultural laborers—and this may enable him to gain new strength and a renewed lease of office. Such disinterested oncern for the affairs of others should be pro- perly appreciated by the objects of it. P.S.—It will be seen by the telegram else- where that the sheriff's officers of New York have posted notices of the sale of the furnitare Of the city offices unless the money is pi wil the Sw» end other “ring” papers of New York tmve any comments to make upon this appall- ing condition of affairs in that city? —-ree- ‘The Registrar General for England in his thirty-fourth annual report shows the rate of ‘Mortality in England (including Wales) for each of the thirty-four vears 153871, at twelve groups Of ages, forming the most important seties of facts relating to the life of a nation ever pu Ushed. One of the most interestin z facts estab- lished is that the mean lifetime of the English people is 40.86 years, or inround numbers forty- one years; that is the average numer of years that people born in England live. — By the announcement elsewhere i it will be seen that trains will be resumed to-morrow on the Baltimore and Potomac railroad and will be fun regularly hereafter. The raliroad com- pany has displayed exceeding energy in repair- ‘ing the damages by the late heavy storms, and the traveling public who have found tiemselves 50 promptly and comfortably accoma dated on this new line will be glad to learn that their favOrite route is again available. —Ss0e- We hear that the proprietor of on of the Principal hotels at a fashionable summ >r resort bas already cleared over forty thoumm | dollars on this season’s business; and the se :son, as everybody knows, has been an exce} ionally poor one.
