Someot the streets in Alexandria were flooded the water rushin; ing everything many of them being for the time, re passable. The britge at the intersection of Pitt and Princess streets Was washed away, and the water at the intersection of Royal and cess streets was about eighteen inches deep, flooding the houses in that neighborhood aud compelling their oesupants to move their fur- niture to the upper stories and to open all the lower doors so as to allow the water free exit. The upper end of King street and Peyton street were submerged to such a degree that the street cars could not run until the flood had subsided. EXPLOSION. The damage A TERRIFIC AND FAT. The Baltimore Sun say a flicted upon the low coun aaijecnat to is ridge Landing, near the Relay House, is very great, has been attended with loss of lite. Shortly after nightfall on Wednesday the waters of the Patapsco rose so suddenly that consider- able property near the landing ‘was destroyed. At Ellicott’s smelting furnace the water rose so rapidly that the furnaces were inundated, causing a terrific explosion, shattering the greater portion of the building and kiiling two men who were attending the furnaces. The explosion was occasioned by the watersurround- ing a blast containing several tons of moulten iron, and the sudden action of the water upon the heated mass generated steam so suddenly that an explosion similar in effect to that of @ steam boiler occurred, The damage done to the mill by the water and explosion will amount to many thousands of dollars. ANNAPOLIS CUT OFF. Great damage has been done to the Annapolis and Elk Ridge railroad. Thedown train W eon day night passed safely over the line, bu: Thuredey morning the 6:20 train was able, with difficulty, to reach only Igiohart’s station, about four or five miles from Annapolis. The earth at this point was washed completely from be- neath the track, and it is learned that no less than six places are washed so badly as to be impassable by the train. Mr. Wm. R. Hutton, civil engineer of the road, with a force of work- men, is on the road, and by one o’clock had mended four of the six injured parts. He is now at work on a culvert at Millersville, which is washed away, thirty or forty feet wide and about thirty deep. One other culvert remains to be repaired, that at Follonsby gate. No mail was received at Annapolis Thursday from any point. THE BALTIZORE AND OM10 AND METROPOLITAN BRANCH RAILROADS. It was also found im- possible to return, and the passengers, 40 or 5) in number, were forced to remain on’ the cara all night. The ratlroad bridge ofthe Potomac road at this point is much less elevated than the lofty viaduct of the Washing- ton branch road, its lower timbers were therefore brought duite near the surface of the mighty torrents that fairly tore along under the structure on Weduneeday night, Yet, notwithstanding this, the bridge escaped with but very slight —-. The abutments are somewhat washed, and several of the timbers broken by being ‘struck by floating timbers, probably the wreck of the county road bridge from above. The damage to the track of the Potomac road, however, as already indicated, is very great. The first serious wash of the road is at Williams’ dam, on Stony Run Branch. The dam gave way about ten o'clock, and the large volume of water thus let loose, swept with immense force over the railroad track for nearly haifa mile, tearing out all the ballasting and bed of the road, and leaving, when the Water subsided, portions of the track suspended in the air without any ‘visible means of sup- port.” The greater portion of the track, how- ever, was carried over a steep embankment and deposited upside down in a position some twelve feet below the bed of the railroad.
