Eighteen months ago, Joh Rowland, Mary's father, died, and since that time her stepmother bas treated ber outrageous- ly. She bas been locked in a room and einen srarcely food enough to keep life in her body, demed the necessaries of life, and kept in filthy condition, and with scarcely clothes enough to cover her nakedurss. Sunday morn- ing she escaped from her prison and went tothe houre of a friend and received shelter. She was wasted to a skeleton, her limbs were no thicker than a man's finger, and her body can be spanned readily. Her friends called in a phy- sician. Her condition is critical.
