_EVE! NING STAR. Editor. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. ASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY..... + Angust 9, 1873, ‘The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or any portion of it,can have Taz Star mailed to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, sccem- panied by the money, should be seut to the busi- ‘hess office of the paper. ———_-<e2-____—_ THE WAWASET TRAGEDY. Not since the terrible explosion at the Ar- senal years ago, carrying death to so many families tn this city, has the commanity had such a shock as that experienced through the loss of the steamer Wawaset with its precious freight ef loved ones—mothers, wives, daugh- ters, sons, husbands, the hope, pride and sup- port of so many homes. It is too soon to fix the exact blame for this Swtul disaster, but there is already the usual painful tale of unavailable life-preservers, boats that could not be launched, fire apparatus that would not serve the purpose on the emergency, and a hopeless waste of life almost within a stone's throw of the shore. It seems, however, that the steamer was not beached in shoal water before the fire had full possession, as was first reported, but though steam was put upon her when the fire was dis- covered, the engiue suddenly stopped working through some derangement of the machinery by the fire, when the boat was in eight feet water; and though the boat touched the shore in four or five feet water, subsequently, slackened impetus tt seems probable that she @id not ground at that point, but floated into deeper water before she finally sunk. This would account for the fact that so many were drowned. Another reason why 80 riaDy women and children perished was that they were huddled aft, and were there exposed to the full force of the flames, as the strong draft carried the fire in that direction. The fire spread so rapidly in the middle of the steamer 48 son to cut off all communication from the stern to the bows. ‘There were some five hundred life preservers on board, but they were in the gangways on the main deck, and few of them were reached. ‘This shows the necessity that some more avail- able place for their storage should be made, as well asthat some better life saving apparatus than the usual boats should be provided for steamers. Two or three rafts, of some light ma- terial, that could have been readily dropped in- to the water without possibility of capsizing, would have saved every life on the Wawaset. A Ray of Hope. We take solid comfort in the information which comes to feet that few or m sort hotels are ful! t prietors, if they making very | great summer re- and that their pro- are * year, American people are regain the subject of “going away for the sum ‘The indulgence in this expensive luxury reached its height during the dush times of the w and when the extray- ors, petroleum na- eculators, together ney, fixed the standard when money was plenty agances of shoddy cont bobs and gold anc k with a deprecia ar of prices. There bas been a wonderfal change since then In the financial si ition of most people. Fortunes are no longer made in a day, save in an occasional Wall street swin The vulgar new-rich usurpers of social position have mostly vacated their shaky pinchback thrones; currency has come to be worth almost as much as coin, and the general business of the country bas been put back somewhat nearer to its old- fashioned legitimate footing. Hotel keepers, however, have never been able to realize that the war is over, or that values bave in any way changed. They have gone on year after year, charging the inflated prices of war times. And the public goose, influenced mainly by @ foolish desire to be -+in the fashion,” has gone on season after season paying them,— putting up the while with such dining and sleeping-room discomforts as it would not tole- rate for a single week in itsown home. Tobe sure, protests and complaints at the outrageous extortions were not wanting; but what cared the avaricious landlord for the groans and wincings of bis victims,so long as they returned every summer and paid their bills promptly. But this year it seems that a large number of the annual dupes have concinded to avail themselves of the only remedy that is of any avail against the public enemy, and are fight- ing out the heated term on the home line, leaving the greedy publicans almost desolate in their shabbily-fur bly served dining rooms. sign. It isat once evidence of a healthy indif- ference a# to what ‘‘fashion” may door say, and of a formic on against organized imposition.
