The commission are expected inthe United States within the next six weeks. Miss CLama Barton's HEALTH.—The many friends of Miss Clara Barton will be pained to hear of her continued illness for the last six or eight months in London. Following the arda- ous labors and self-sacrificing trials she under- went in the German hospitals, subsequently at Strasbourg, Metz, and Paria, during the Fran- co-Prussian war and Communism, she has been subjected to severe attacks of ueuralgic affection and other nervous disorders, which, like those of Florence Nightingale, result from over tax- ation. For several months she was confined to her bed, but for the past two months has been Slowly convalescing. though with occasional severe relapses. While but little is known here of the extent of Miss Barton’s work in Europe, it has net been unrecognized there, she having heen presented with crosses of various orders of Prussia and France. PERSON AL.—Mr. Sumner did not stop in Bos- ton on his return to Massachusetts, but took the train direct for Nahant, where he is stopping with his next friend, the poet Longfellow. Mait Roprertes in THE West.—Special Agent Wickizer, of the Post Office department, reports from Sait Lake, July 31, that highway robbery on the main routes in the Rocky moun- tains is becoming quite frequent. On ‘the 9th uit., robbers attacked the mail coach on the Montana route, near Pleasant Valley, and took $19,000 in treasure from Wells Fargo & Co.’s express, but did not molest the mails. The robbers have been arrested. A few days later, on the same route, near the Snake river, the stage-coach was fired into and the driver mor- tally wounded. The poor fellow had the nerve and presence of mind to put whip to his horses, by which all was saved but hisown life. General Spinner has addressed a letter to the cashier of a New Engtand bank, whe for- warded two notes, one of the denomination of $500 and one of $100, for redemption, entirely ving never been folded, without spot or ith one-tenth of each note scissored out ith a clean cut. The Gencral says: Under the old regulation of the Treasury, these two notes could have been redeemed for only nine-tenths of their face. These rules, unfortunately for the government, have been lately modified, so the penalty cannot be enforce Under this more than generous modification you claim to have returned to you new United States notes ot like denominations, under government con- tract, at the expense of the United States. The charge to the government by the express con pany for their transportation both ways wou I e one dollar and twenty cents. For ¢ consider the request decidedly — eo First, you or your client —_wilfully mutilate” new clean notes and then you ask the government not only to replace them, but to pay the expense and run the msk of their transportation both ways. This to my mind is piling iton pretty steep. You not only burn with ® hot iron, but you ask the burned one to pay for heating’ the ‘poker. If you will turn to the S5th section of the national banking law, you will find that if any person had treated twoof your bank notes in the way that these two United States notes have been, you coald recover by action, in any court having jurisic- tion, fifty dollars for each of the mutilations Now what is sauce for the goose should be sauce for the gander. Ought not the perpetra- tors of these mutilations be made to respond in like manner. Under these circumstances it has been concluded that the notes be retained at any rate until the pieces that were cut out of them be returned to the office, and until the apparent fraudulent or malicious mutilation shat have been satisfactorily explained to the department. GENERAL BUTLER IN THE LABOR REFORM ConveNTION.—A dispatch to the New York Herald from Lowell, Massachusetts, alluding to General Butler’s standing in the reform con- vention, in session in that city, says: ‘General Butler bad been consulted about the use of his name before the convention, and while he ex- pressed sympathy in the ten-hour movement, it was his wish that his name shod not ‘be Renee up a8 acandidate, for he feared it would hurt him at the regular republican con- vention. The General’s wishes were kindly re- spected, but his name was nevertheless fre- quently alluded to in the course of the disaus- sions of the day. Some of the members of tle convention criticized and bet awe him, chiefly on aceount of his salary-grabbing proclivities. The majority of the meinbers seemed favorable toward him, and it may be safely assamet that the party will generally go for: Butler for the next Governor.” A resolution denouncing the back pay grab was voted down. The discussion resulted in Lmportant changes in the present ministry. The Marquis of Ripon and Childro and Baxter have resigned, the two first boug vig ute reasons. Mr. Gladstone, in addition to the Premiership, assumes the Chancellorahip of the Exchequer in lien of Lorre, who assumes the Home Office; Mr. Bruce is to be made a peer, and will succeed Lora Ripon as president of the Council; Mr. Bonham Carter succeeds Mr. Baxter as Joint Secretary of the Treasury; Arthur Peel becomes the liberal whip. Other changes are expected in a few days. John Bright joins the cabinet as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. rnd SE A Hore, Prorristor Runs AWAY WITH —A An EmpLoye.—A special telegram to the Chi- cago Inter-Ocean, from Fort Wayne, Ind., Au- gut 4, sare: “Galvin Stewart, prietor of the ummit City Hotel, of this clty, a few days since eloped with a woman named Alice Ge- rard, who had been employed at the hotel. It is said this Alice Gerard has now four husbands still living.’” UNWELCOME AMERICAN VISITORS IN ENG- Lanp.—The recent unusual heat in England bas produced a bo of mosquitoes—strangers tothat climate, but apparently soon brought into existence by a short spell of hot weather. A Fellow of the Zoological Society writes to the London Times, enclosing a specimen of the in- sect, and as “Whence do they come? Are their eggs lying dormant, and called into insect life by exceptionally high temperature?” A rivate letter from an American now in Eng- nd says that the mosquitoes were quite thic in the air, and that almost everybody had been bitten by them. The bom! it of bu Shaw in it_~ Gath” takes a cautious ibble—The bleoded Yacht Com- mittee of the Stockton Monse, (Correspondence of The Star.) Oarz May, August 6th, 1573. Every year the various summer retreats have @eensation. These seem to be an indispensibic adjunct, necessary to relieve monotony, and a= long as they serve such a laudable purpose, (it they can be so called,) human nature, which cau bear the burden financially of being soid at a fair price, relishes the same. Cape May has had its adventure—it will last for the season “My Lud” Massey, who disturbed its sociai equilibrium, has perhaps had his exploits sufti ciently recorded in the public press, and were it not that the idiosyneracies of the would-b noble party had captured two well-known Washington newspaper correspondents, I shou! perhaps refrain from further notice of this suc- cessful impostor. Everybody knows Shaw, the ‘‘Nestor of the Row,” the ‘Dean of the faculty’'—him of the golden locks; and likewise Townsend, the ubiquitous and graphic, known wherever news- papers are read. Shaw always repairs to some watering place in the summer, governing the selection of the resort according to the line of railroads over which he is ‘‘loaded” in stocks. A glance at his horoscope, early in the season, developed the fact that he could make Cape May free of charge, and, like @ shrewd finan- cier, which he is, betook himself and family to the salt sea waves, which roar their billows upon this sandy coast. What brought Town- send here is not known. In fact, at takes him anywhere is a mystery, but, like Johony Thompson, when any event of more a ae ing moment transpires, he is generally found “on hand” to touch it'upin that glowing color for which his facile pen is noted. MY LUD, MY LUD! Not many days ago when both these celebrities were whiling away, the heavy hours, a stranger without baggage, or even an outre in way of fashionable garments suddenly visited, the Cape. Although his clothing did not’ cou- form to modern mode, his tongue was yolable, and scareely had he been among the precis: and dignified guests before Mrs. Grundy ascer- tained that he was a “Lud” a genuine sprig of nobility for whom blood would teil notwith- standing ascant and seedy wardrobe back: himup. Who t heard of a woman keeping asecret? Mrs. Grundy was no exception, ana strange, passing strange, Shaw, the nestor vt al., was the first man on the island to hear of th rank of the distinguished (?) but by no mea: prepossessing visitor. Untortunately the start ing pews Wascommunicated to him at night, and during it silent watches, his reverics chaso:i phantom shadows, of STOCKS IN THE EMMA MINE, adivy inthe allowance of the Duke of Edin burgh, a financial stakeholder in the De races, or an arbitrator in the Geneva awar: He arose carly, and borrowing a velvet coat and turned-up shoes, walked as qaickly as possibi tothe room of the slumbering Townsend. A succession © aweke him, and Shaw en tered shoutin “Old boy, Lord Massey « England, a Knight of the Bath and other dis- tinguished orders, has arrived ! ji Shaw, you're drunk! Who the devil's Lord Massey I don’t know, nor care. Get up, old boy Let’s organize a quicksilver company and him some shares. Il sign as presideat and you as secretary. Good heavens! I wish Paincer was here to manage him! SEARCHING POR HIS LORDSHIP. It is very seldom that newspaper men search: for the Lord. Townsend had no inclination to proceed in that direction at all, but the fervor of Shaw inspired him. They had wandered promiscnously for an hour or more, when an old colored woman, who was di her mis- tress’ back hair in the morning air, shouted: “Dar he!” a My dear madam, is that the Lord?” said aw. “ Suah, my honey, dat ar am Lord, a rt A Following upon this occurred the following presentation and introduction: « My Lord wg my friend Mr. Shaw.” « Not Joe Shaw, I hope?’ “Oh, no, my dear sir; I spell my name thus— S-h-a-h. Lam sometimes called the Nestor. I always feather my nest at the expense of such people as yo—I mean”— [Sotto voce: **For God's sake, Townsend, talk about stocks!") “Gath,” who seems to have had his suspicions aroused by the appearance of the scion of Brit- ish aristocracy, inquired of bis “ludship’ how it hi at he had not taken his seat in the Lords. “Oh, that is a bore,” was the reply; ‘its too slow, you know, for us young bloods.” We pre- fer to knock about, and see something of the world before we settle down into that chamber Of fossils.” ‘This answer seemed reasonable, and the faith of the journalistic duo in the legality of hix lordship’s titles was then and there declared over certain bottles of champague. How Shaw afterwards took the proud Briton out buggy riding upon the most conspicuous streets, otherwise hob-nobbed with him, are matters concerning which the Nestor is now disposed to be somewhat reticent, though he tells how others were diddled by his lordship with intin- ite raciness. THE LORD’s YACHT. The particulars of how Lord Massey came to Cape May (ag he said)in his yacht, astold to them, need not.be recounted, nor need be the very civil manner in which he wasreceived into some of the opps # pee pos sojourning on the island. It will suffice and serve the purpose to state that having ingratia‘ed himself into the good graces of nearly all the {guests at the ho- tels a supper was given him by Mr. Cake, which was engineered by Nestur Shaw. When the hour of parting came “r:y Lord’ invited all the prominent people on the island to be se- lected to meet with the accommodations of his yacht (one-hundred in number) for a sail the next day. Of course Sha‘y prepared the list of those who were to go. Muney was no object. The list was soon made out ‘and nota single fortunate invited one declined, All the car- riages and stage coaches in Natlor’s stables were engaged to convey thoseof the pleasure party to the wharf two mils distant. “My Lord's” yacht was anchored outside the break- water, and Shaw stood on the top of the Stock- ton House in the rain bursing Roman candles to signal to those in charge of the craft to bring her in. THE LORD DENOUNCED. The day for the sail was propitioos—the one hundred invited guests had been dreaming ti night previous of the lordly banquet to be giv on the yacht—they waited impatiently tosample the rare wines, dating back to Nebucl nazer’s time. Alas! forthe ve lice Geert vc A change came, and the assumed noble dignity of milord suddenly became as evanescent as thin air.
