_ EVENING STAR. CROSBY &. _ NOYES....... Editor, Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: ~Auguat %, 1978, The Star By Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer, or Bry portion of it,can have Tas Stax mailed to their address for such time as they desire, atthe rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be seat to the bual- aces office of the paper. as The democratic conventions in Virginia and Ohio, with their nominations and platforms are considered by democratic papers throughout the country as Indicating that the party is, at least, alive, if it has not much strength. In Ohio they concede that their prospects are not hopeful, because of ‘the mistake of the liberals in making distinct, and therefore defiant, nom- nations.” The vote of Ohio for five years has Leen #8 follows: Dem 238,606 228.581 3,087 1', . x's These figures indieate an average republican re 2 (Now majority of 12,000 in the “off” years. Te Virginia th pmocrats think their chances better. They explain the fact that Virginia was carrie? “or Grant “by a small majority” on the ground of the reluctance of many con- servatives to support Mr. Greeley, who was regarded by them as more politically offensive than Gen. Grant. This disaffected element, including men like Col. Mosby, is now counted upon to return to the support of the democratic ticket. On the whole, however, the repnbdli- ans of Virginia seem to have the most con<- dence of the two. Their candidate, Colon! Haghes, (who was one of the editors of the Richmond Ezaminer during the rebellion,) is & strong man, and their organization seems to be more thorough and active than that of the democracy. —____-+e--____ The New York Tribune, which never wearies in the work of assailing the splendid public im- provements of Washington and misrepresent- ing their effect om values, finds occasion, never- theless, to say 8 good word for the labors of the late Tammany ring in its own city. It frankly admits, in so many words, that, while they were extravagant, “they added to the material wealth of New York;” that “much, though not all, the money which was abstracted from the tax-payers treasury finally found its way into the property-owners’ till; that under {ts rule “public works were carried out which New York needed, and which have paid her many times over,” and that “similar and as much needed improvements languish under the present economic rule of Reform.” This is doubtless true, and it is just as true of the effects of the public improvements in Wash- ington as of those in New York; but in their anxiety to damage in some way the national ministration by their false charges the Tri- ‘ene and its malicious confreres pretend to see only unmixed evil here. The trial was over long ago, and yet the report of the proceedings has not yet been received st the War department. The American Indian Aid Association publish an earnest appeal in behalf of the Modocs. It cites several instances where the whites have violated the laws relative to flags of truce, as- serts that Captain Jack & Co. had a perfect right te do as they did, and that the murder of Canby and Thomas was but the sequence of “continued wicked treatment.” This is illog- ical reasoning to say the least.
