He spoke, also, of beasts and of fowls, and of creeping things and of fishes.” He was, in other words, thoronghly versed in botany and every part of natural history. What an astonishing exhibit of wisdom is this! But a most interesting personage in this pio- ture to us Masons is Hiram, King of 1 i. At this time he must have been advanced In years. He was an intimate friend of Solomon's father, David, and, indeed, built his palace, Loving the father, it was natural he should be pr foundly interested in the son. The Israelites of that day were not remarkable for proficiency iu the mechanic arts. ‘The Sidonions were the eat carpenters, joiners and builders. Whe therefore, Solomon proposed to build a temple, or, as he expressed it, ‘‘a house unto the name of the Lord God,” he sent word to Hiram, the ing officers te serve until October 31:—H. And we are further informed that he furnished and bronght over ‘great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones to lay the foundation of the house.”” I shall not take up your time yy, attempting to describe the great temple. Those of you who peruse the sacred volume—and itis to be hoped no good Mason neglects to do s0—will find a sufficiently minute account of this vast building, its architecture and material, in 1 Kings, chap. vi. Sufficient to say the building was perfect. Some conception of its high fin= ish and the elaborateness of its arrangements may be interred from the fact that, although every timber was prepared for its place, every stone hewed, squared and numbered before it came to Jerusalem, it nevertheless took seve long years to complete the temple. So elab rate were the gilding, carved work, the over- laying with gold, the cherubims, trees, flowers, id other ornaments of that vast and splendid structure, during the building of which was never heard the sound of “hammer, ax, or any et The Schuetzenfest. ‘The attendance at the ith street Schaetzen park yesterday fully equalled that of the two Previous days, and during the day and night the grounds were crowded with men, women and children, enjoying themselves in various ways. Man and wife may be seen rolling ten-pins; the ladies too seem to take a lively interest in the shooting, and not few of them are dangerous rivals to the more perienced marksmen. Young America, and the older folks also, indulge in the pastimes vided, and, on wooden horses, dash round cirele, propelled by the muscular efforts of eeveral colored attendants. The grounds last night presented an oriental Appearapce—at least 10,000 people were present, amt the aniraated thronz, moving to and fro, with their happy faces, led to the conclusion that they relished the enjoyments of the hour, and endorsed the etforts of the Washington Schuet- zen Verein to cater for the pleasure of t by Who join with them in their annual f tivities.
