METROPOLITAN HOTEL Instat light wound on the srm by the cylinder of the locomotive, A crowd soon collected, and the most intense ex- citement was created by the terrible affair, some of the residents thereabouts threatening to lynch the engineer of the locomotive. ‘The lady was picked up and conveyed to the drug store of Mr. Friebus, where she lay in an uncon- sslour state, knowing nothing for some time of what had happened to her poy. The remains of the infant were carefully picked up by Mr. O'Connell, who lives near by, and were taken to the seventh precinct station house, where it was found that the body had been % mangled that it was impossible for any one to recognize what it was except by shreds of its clothing. Lieut. Kelly dispatched a mes- senger to break the news of the death of the child to the facher, and he soon made his ap- pearance at the station house frantic with grief atthe untimely death of his littleone. The coroner had been summo nd viewed the re- ns, and advised the father not to see the child, but go home and let the undertaker be sent to prepare it for burial. The friends of the futher persuaded him to accept of the ad- vice, and he departed from the station to look for bis wife.
