The police commissioners, finding themselves i censured pretty severely for this star-chamber practice, have now undertaken to give oat a “‘aynopsis” of the evidence; but it is charged , that the evidence thas published is garbled, and that it suppresses all the testimony bearing chews if against one of the policemen who dragged away panied by the money, should be sent to the basi- The Wall street markets continue active. The amount a colored man to the station-house for “inso- | lence,” because the latter in reply to an order from the policemen to go home, answered that | he ‘paid rent’ for the house where he was standing, and further deciared that he would not submit to arrest, because he had done noth- ing. The American sharply censures the com. missioners for their course, and the Sun sug- | gests, guardedly, that “it was a mistake or error tn point of judgment” to conduct the ex- | amination with elosed doors, and in the ab- sence of the reporters of the daily press, “if it | was the original intention of the board to pub- | lish the testimony of the witnesses.” There is really Ro more reason why police commissioners should sit with closed doors than any other | w; municipal or legislative body. — oe A good many afilicted people who have had their rest broken by the yelping curs that infeat ‘Washington will bid Caleb Cushing God-spoed in bis endeavor to show that citizens have some | rights in the matter that dog-owners are bound to respect. District courts against the owner of one of these | Pests, claiming $1,000 damages on the first count, and £3,000 om the seeond. He sets forth that the defendant did wrongfully keep a dog which “‘was used and accustomed to bark con- tinually by day and night, and that on Satur- Gay, the 12th inst., the defendant did then and i there allow the said dog to bark incessantly from early in the day through the whole day and night following, and did thereby hinder and prevent the plartiff trom studying and transacting bis lawful business by day, and de- prived him of his sleep during the night, as in- juriously to affect his health and the peaceful use of his property.” The second count alleges the keeping of the same dog, aud that said dog was a dangerous one. Mr. Cushing originally sought remedy for his grievance before the Board of Health, bat that body held that they had not the power to re- lieve him, and he accordingly brought the mat- ter before the courts. He ts too good # lawyer not to know what he is about, and the fact that he bas instituted this suit will give great en- couragement to those troubled by the same nui- sance to believe that they have legal rights in the premises. The case will be watched with interest. ee A correspondent of the New York Herald, re- ferring to the statements about a “mock mar- riage” between Goodrich and bis murderess, calls attention to the fact that under the laws | of New York there can be no such thing as a | mock marriage between single persons. Any | agreement to live together as husband and wife guarries them. There is no need of priest, mag- | ‘Istrate or formal ceremony. If, therefore, as | ~Miss King’s letter avers, there was an agree- ment ef marriage between Goodrich and her | before some doctor or third person, and if | Goodrich and she were then both single, it was | ® real marriage, and the woman now in Brook- | Chusetts avenue. lyn jail is his widow, andthe charge againat ber is that of having murdered her lawful hus- band. This construction of the laws of New York wil! be rather embarrassing to parties in that state of the Goodrich class who have been playing the game of bogus marriage, supposing ‘they were not thereby incurring any legal obli- gations. ++22-—_____ In a late letter from Vienna to Dr. C.
