Great excitement was eansed in South Wash- ington about 4 o'clock last evening by the re- port that a myn had been shot and killed on 34 street. Un applying at the first precinct sta- tion-bouse soon afterwards, it was ascertained by a STAR reporter that the parties to the atfair were two colored men named William A. Fortune and Jeseph Smallwood. It appears Bhat the two men meton Sd street, between Maine and Maryland avenues, in the region known to residents as “‘iiell’s Detight,” when an altereation arose about the division of some plonder, which both claimed. and Smallwood ficked up a brickbat and hurled it at Fortane, ut he dodging it, the missile struck a small col- Ored girl and knocked her senseless. The shooter immediately ran off in a southerly di- rection, and was soon out of sight behind some shanties.
