John H Russell, decided to send issues to the Circnit Court to be tried by jury. The plaintiffs claim that under a special agreement with defendant they are entitled to £1,000 for services rendered cetendant. Russell had @ claim against the government in the Court of Claims for the seizure and useof certain steamboats during the war, and Pe goonies was given for 810,000 in his favot ‘he government applied to the Su- preme Court of the United States, and, pending the appeal, plaintiffs in this case allege that they were employed to have the appeal with- drawn or ‘diswhensd. and they ee their case until the appeal was’ di . The: claim that Russell refused to pay them, and they procured an injunction tosave themselves. The government, however, paid the judgment less £5,000. The case was refered to J. 0. Back PAY.—About £120,000 will be required to pay the claims for the additional twenty per cent. compensation allowed to certain civil employes of the govern- ment in the city of Washington by a recent de- cision of the tof Claims, under an act of 1:67, which decision was affirmed by the Su- preme Court of the United States. Upon one class of these claims only was the appeal taken from the tirst decision of the Court of Claims, and these were of laborers employed on the public grounds, guards at the jail, and work- men on the capitol extension. "Upon the Sa prjme Court aflirwwing the decision of the court below, and ordering that these persons be paid twenty per cent., it was understood that the workmen in the navy yard and the government printing office, who had beén before the Court of Claims, would also be allowed additional compensation, and the Court of Claims so ruled, directing that judgment be entered in favor of all of them, numbering about eleven hundred. ‘The ninety days allowed by law tor the government to appeal to the Supreme Court on the latter cases will expire on the 14th inst., and unless an appeal be taken by that time the claims will be paid. The impression is, how- ever, that no appeal will be taken, though some of the accounting officers of the tr jury are of the opinion that the Judgments must be paid out of the appropriation made by Congress to EVENING STAR, Washington News and Gossip.
