Pinkney Cross in driving into Washington from his place north of the city was stopped on the road in broad daylight by a man, who pointed a pistol at his head and demanded his watch. Mr. Cross having no means to protect Rimectf, gave it up. The party represented that he whhed to raise mot to get away from the city, and promised that he would pawn the watch and return the pawn ticket to Mr. Cross that he might recover it. Boarp or Scnoot Trvsters.—A regular monthly meeting of the board of trustees of the Georgetown public schools was held last even- ing, and after discussion regarding the work of the Legislative Assembly concerning the pub- lic schools of Georgetown, means to push for- ward the erection of a new school building now in course of construction to a rapid completion, the finances of the board, various means and plang being suggested 20 as to expedite the pay- ment of the indebtedness. to the Barmers’ ‘and Mechanics’ National Bank, and Mr. Hunt, the contractor for the school house, definite action was postponed until after consultation with Governor Cooke, who is ex-officio chairman of the building committee. An application from Miss Alice Watkins, the late medal-scholar at the female grammar school, for a teacher's po- sition when a vacancy should occur,was placed on file. On motion of Mr. Dunlop, it was de- cided that the term of the next school year should begin on the ist of September and end on the 30th of June succeeding, and that all contracts with teachers be made for that period, their salaries being paid in ten equal nstalments. The teachers’ salaries were ranged as follows: Assistant teachers, ©1400; at rimary schools, S450; at secondary, $700; at intermediate, $500; at female grammar, $1,000, and at male grammar, $1,190.
