It is stated that Prof. Agassiz is preparing work in opposition to the development theory of Darwin, which it is hinted will deaf a more | effective blow to that doctrine than it has yet received. This is the side on which Darwinisma must be struck, if it is demolisbed. The heat- €d invective of theologians will do little so long asthe Darwinians can make a show of calmly resting their claims on irresistible scientific facts. But if a scientist of the standing of Agassiz can demonstrate that the facts relied on areal! wrong. or only assummd, then Iar- Winism will lose all the prestige it has attained as the assumed product of patient unbiassed investigation. A sharp and effective criticism on Darwin's latest book, in the Evinburgh Ke- that the scientific thinkers are not all on his side, and that some of them at least posed to demonstrate that he has jumped to his conclusions in a most speculative and an- scientific way. The Rerivwr writer says: “Now, the power of spoutancous and sys- tematic transmutation which Mr. Darwin's bypothe=is assumes, has not yet been shown to exist, the slight variations within fixed and natrow limits, which is all he demonstrates. being wholly insufficient to produce the ener mous changes attributed to ‘t. The fatal daw e the absence of evidence as to the existence and working of the power which the theory as-nmes. Not only the long hi: torical period, bat the immensely longer ee; logical eras are silent om this vital pe ‘he records of thousands and hundreds of thou- sands of years have been ransacked in vain for the needed evidence. When pressed with these difficulties Mr. Darwin takes refuge in infinite time and unknown - ce. in the alleged imperfection of the geological record and the uasumed eons of animated nature that died and made no sign. Here, of course, he cannot be followed, and is at perfect liberty, therefore, to fabricate hi imaginary proots in any and to any extent he pleases. To cover this sort of retreat, or at least to afford ample room for this sort of indefinite appeal, Professor Tyndall formally claims free scope for the exercise of the imagination in acience. He admits that, “in more senses than one, Mr. Darwin has drawn heavily upon the scientific tolerance of his ‘Fe He bas dr heavily upon time in the development of his species, aud he has drawn adventurously upon matter tm his theory of hesis. But he boldly de- mands that in science the speculative faculty shall be free towander into regions where the hope of certainty would seem to be entirely shut out. Inother words, when a daring sciertitic speculator finds himself in difficulties—becomes bankrupt in facts—he must be allowed to draw upon the bank of fancy at will, with the assur- ance that his dratt, if eyed with suspicion by older-established sclentie firms, will be eagerly honored by excited, credulous, and expectant novices.” eden Gorton drm—low m Flour a doll aod Corn active for Pee ied sayy os 1%. and anne Ti Noe ‘Pa, ot Tyochanged. “Wlisky—spall sales ui ar upchang~.!.
