General Sheridan is about to build cavalry quarters at Fort Lincoln to winter the ith cavalry regiment after its return from the present expedition. ‘The steamer Peninat, ith over 300 tons of government freight, was tostarton the 15th of June, and the steamer Key West, with about $60 tons,on the 19th, to go from Bismarck up the . cllowstone river to convey supplies for the expedition. Wise, of Virginia, delivered the annual address before the literary seciety of Roanoke college Tuesday night, on the subject of the physical structure of the domain of the United States, and its probable effect inthe future apon the progress, power, peace, commerce and consti- tution of the government. He advocated the construction of the James’ river and Kanawha canal as a belt of union, and advanced the the- ories that had the Mississippi flowed east and west the south would have never been whipped; that slavery had been a blight upon southern industry and prosperity; that the large pianta- mn system was anti-commercial and anti- manufactural, and that was the reason why no greut commercial metropolis had sprung up at the mouth of the Chesapeake bay. Last year, during the months of June and Juty, this gentleman shipped three thousand bushels, for which he received fancy prices.
