_EVENING STAR. | cRosBY S. NOYES...... Editor, Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: THE RSDAY ..Mareh 20, 1878. | The Corcoran Art Gallery. T all it seems that the opening of the Corcoran Art Gallery has been indefinitely | Postponed by the trustees. This will be | geuerally regretted by the citizens of the | Jvstrict amd others who had hoped to ‘be | able to soon avail themselves of the magnificent | giftof Mr. Corcoran. At a recent meeting of | the trustees the matter was fully Alecussed | and the conciasion reached that it would not be | ‘advientag to open the gallery with its present Timited nnmber of works of art, as the building | is very large and the pictures and statues on | band would ocenpy but a small portion of it. | In view of this fact it was deemed judicious to | increase the present collection, and Mr. William | ‘T. Walters, of Baltimore, one of the trustees | vod chairman of the committee on works of art, who intends visiting the Vienna Exposition | th's summer, was authorized to purchase works ©f art im Europe, not exceeding 940,900 in | valine to be aided to the gallery. It is the inten- | tion of Prof. Henry, of the Smithsonian Insti- tute, to further the designs of the trustees. by ributing from time to time, various works | srt. now in Earope, to which the Institate is Entitled through exchange, but which have | never been called for, owing to thelack of room | &@! the Smithsonian. | trustees at their last meeting authorized | touching and hanging of other pictures, | fs, we understand, Is being done. Ther elected Mr. Charles M. Matthews, of | town, a trustee in place of Col. J. G. Herret, resigned. As the matter now stands it 4+ not probable that the gallery will be open to | or8 before late next fall. ~ie a ee—-rrreepreat Louisiana Polities, reference to the paragraph in TagStar Ir yesterday, stating that Senator West, of Louisi- wna. bad declared his purpose to oppose the Contirmation of Colonel Casey on the ground that “Colonel Casey and his friends were inimi- cal to the interests of the Senator and the best interests of the republican party in that state,” | the Republ of this morning says : “1 possible that Colonel Casey may be | inimical to the interests of Senator West, or that the Senator, through a failure to secure all | the patronage he desires or believes himself | d to, may think that Mr. Casey is not as | y¥ as he might be; but the statement that asey"s confirmation will not conduce to the | Dest interests of Hy geet in that state is entire! void of truth. It is a matter of record that Senator West was elected to the — evhrely — ‘Warmoth’s influence, and, fact, it was claimed before Scofield’s investi- gating committee that Senator West was the veot Warmoth in the Senate of the United and that Warmoth had his resignation is pocket to accept at any time he (West) | to represent him as he desired. The World's cogent arguments in this Connection have an application to murder cases | elsewhere than New York. That paper says: “ The petition of the seven jurors in the Fos- fer case to Gov. Yes- number has a cartoon by Bellew, enti- ‘ tled “The Question of the Day,” in which a group of hollow-cheeked consumers and out- | at-the-elbows farmers are gathered about the Genius of Columbia, while a big-paunched railroad king stands at her elbow. Dr. Hammond, one of the |r 'ysicians who examined him, refused to give a certificate of insanity, but concurred with his colleagues in the opinion that Train is “subject to delusions, irrational in his conduct, and of unsound mind.” A physician who has known Train a long time says he is not insane, but that continued confinement wil! make him so, and that he ought to be tried or released for hu- manity’t sake.
