EVENING STAR. DOUBLE SHEET. Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: Will Congress be Just? ‘We sincerely hope that the act of the House | yesterday in depriving the Committee on the | District of Columbia of their quota of time is | not indicative of the intention on the part of that body of denying to that committee an op- | portunity during the present session of report- | ing the various measures which the committee have considered, and which they belive require the speedy attention of Congress. The District Committees in both houses have taithfully en- | deavored to discharge the special duties assign. | €d them, and it is but proper that they should be permitted to make their recommendations, based on careful and thorough consideration, with reference to measures affecting the in- terests of the people of the District. Many of the bills, for instance, which the House Com- mittee were yesterday prepared to report, are of great importance, and if they had been reported would doubless have passed withoat discussion. | ‘The bill extending the time for the payment of Assessments is of this character, and its speedy | passage is demanded by a large number of our worthy citizens whose interests will suffer materially in case it should fail to become a law. The clase of legislation which Congress is asked | i to pass, the legislative assembly of the District | is enjoined from enacting, and we trust the | former body will see the necessity for acting upon the District bills which the committees are Prepared te report, and which involve no ap- progriation, before the close ot the present ——++ee-_____ A Railroad with a few “Laterals.” While it is popularly understood that Mr. ‘Yom Scott has had his finger in a good many railroad pies, yet in consequence of the celerity ot his movements, it is never quite possible to say, within @ couple of dozen lines of road, exactly how many roads he is operating at any given time. Probably the latest data is that afforded by the Financier which prints a tabu- lar statement of the miles of road controlled by the Pennsylvania railroad company, either by lease or by ownership of a majority of the stock. ‘The list embraces sixty-three railroads, includ- ing those now being constructed. These are all made tributary to the main line from Philadel- to Pittsburg, and their termini are dis- tributed in every state in the union. Including the Union, Central, and Texas Pacific, the total extent of the lines will be nearly sixteen thous- and miles, and the grand aggregate of eapital invested in them will be at least $670,000.00. Besides these are two hundred and fifty miles of canals, and a line of four steamships now build- ing torun between Philadelphia and Liverpool. ‘The total capital imvested in these means of transportation, controlled by one orgauization, | will searcely fall short of $750,000,000. It will | thus be seen that nearly one-third of the rai roads of the United States are under the control ot a few individuals in one corporation. In view of the vast political power which could be wielded by a combination of the major portion of the railroad interest of the United States, this 1s a significant fact. In a commercial point of view, it is also worthy of note that all the transcontinental roads will be controlled in Philadelphia. below zero from Iowa to’ Lake Huron and nort! The great iron-masters of South Wales say that they cannot go on selling iron at the present cost of production in Eng- land, and that they must lower wages ten per cent. or stop working. The men say they are not satisfied with the masters’ story. They have studied the market prices of coal and iron, and the figures, as they read them, show that the iron-masters ought to be doing a very thriving trade at the present rate of wages in England. It seems to be the old story of the attempt of the masters tomake the men bear the whole burden of the increased costs of production. rrr ondition affords an excellent op; ies to ho ay: benefits identic: "This association has been le. ime Imenccensful operation lor a ported of tere years, mCce fal ope on ‘Shares can be obtained PHIL. 8. Among the “straws” they point to | is the just received statement (per the Atchison Champion) that Mr. Sexton, of Wilson county, a | member of the lower house of the Kansas Legis- j tatare, who on the 20th ultimo voted for Yorke, | (having voted for Senator Pomeroy on the first ballot,) introduced a resolution a few days ago asking Yorke to make a personal explanation. Mr. Sexton, in introducing the resolution, said that he had been deceived by Yorke with regard to the whole matter, and he hoped the House would forgive him for his unintentional indorse- ment of such a man.
