ARS STAR. _ Was HINGTON CITY: _ NESDAY. benary 5, 1973. Unautherized Use of a Man's Name. It scems to us that a good deal of undeserved censure has been bestowed upon Mr. William Callen Bryant because of his resenting the un- «i use of his name by the Greeley mon- t committee. The gentlemen engaged ii raising a fund for a monument to Mr. Greeley | published an appeal for subscriptions, append- ing thereto the name of Mr. Bryant as one of the signers. He, therefore, in his paper, the Post. declared that he had never signed the ad- stress, never suthorized anybody to sign it for him, and had never even seen it or beard of it until it appeared im print. Regarding the use ot his name in this way as an imperti- ne} he asked that it might be omitted from subsequent publications. The assump- tion has been made that Mr. Bryant's ac- tion in the matter was dictated by his old hostility to Mr. Greeley; but we do not see that this is a legitimate conclusion. And even if he was thus intluenced, the has nothing todo with the merits of the case. Had the paper been presented to Mr. Bryant, he might or might not have signed it; but unless he did in person, or authorized it, no other man had any business to forge his signatare—tfor that is what it amounts to—however meritorions the object. ‘The practice of signing other men’s names un- authorized to circulars, petitions, calls for pub- meetings, &., & amd needs just such a check as is afforded in this plucky deed of Mr. Bryant’s, who, at the kof having his motives misconstrued, thus asserts his right to the use of his own name. The kimired impertinence of the unauthorized use of person's names in the list of officers at perblic meetings, or as speakers at the same, ht also to receive a similar rebuke. <e2-____ The Bouapartists.
