J. Boyd, late assistant postmaster at Cumberland, on the charge of embezzlement, has occasioned much excitement in that city. He has hitherto borne an excellent character. A strict church mem- ber, he apparentiy led a blameless life, and having no extravagant tastes or habits, seemed to be living within his means. The amount taken was something loss than $2,500, of which as returned $1,000, the money being made up by his friends. He is still in arrears $1,500, for which the holds his note. Upon being brought before United States Gommis- sioner Rogers, in Baltimore, Mr. Boyd waived an examination, and gave bail in the sum of $5,000 for his appearance at the next term of the United States district court. Pantiat BURNING OF ~ CABTEE STEVES! The costly residence of the late Edwin A. Stevens, at Castle Point, on the outskirts of Hoboken, and known as the «Stevens Castle,” took fire yesterday from a defective flue. The Hoboken tiremen being unable toextinguish the flames, not having steamers, the chief engineer telegraphed to Jersey City for all the steamers that could be , and shortly after the arrival of the latter the fire was subdued. The fire in the meantime had burned room and the stories above to the cornices of the tower of the front wing. The main building was not injured by the fire.. The damage to the building will amount to about $10,000. ‘The val- uable library was removed without damage, and the Stevens family remained unharmed in the main building.
