Cor solidation of railroad lines seems to be the Oritor of the diag on all sides, and a rather for- ywidabic combMation of this kind has just been perfected at the north in what is called the New York, Boston and Montreal railway. The main trunk of this new line is three hundred and fifty miles long. Tocomplete it, one hundred nd fifteen nuiles of new road directly north of New York city are necessary. This new line Will pass between the lines of the Harlem and the Hodson river railroads. At Chatham Four Corners, it will connect with the Harlem exten- sion, are so pass onto Katlamd and Montreal. All along the route, this road is intersected by humerous croess-toads in ‘w York and Ver- 1 important trunk lines. branches to varioas other lines. hese are branches to White Plain, Peekskill, Brewster's, Fishkill, %, North Adams, Mass., and Glasten- Vt. At Peekskill, connection will be by means of the proposed suspension with the Erie Ratlroad, the Midland, ant the coal minesof Peunsylvania. At Brewster's, con on is made with the Boston, Hartford, te.and thence with the Portland, Bangor, Halitax. At Chatham, the line crosses the i Albany, and the North Adams gives it an opportanity to hy od - See tet ew York Yates itself that the new road will opena new area of traffie to that city, and develop aregion ‘hose agricultural and lacteal supplies will be Of advantage to the city. Asthe N. ¥. Commercial puts it: “It places New York in direct communica- tion with the line of marchof that tra tion whieh is heading for the Atlantic at Boston aml! Portiand. It gives us a new ave- Hue to Ogdensburg and the St. Lawrence, and all roads lead to New York, this city will be ae eee if it does not draw aya good share of commerce, the ex- pectation of which has inspired the movement of every pick and drill set at work during the many years in which the Hoosac tunnel has grown from & sneer to a success.” We are gla to see that the inauguration com- mittee think they will be able toraise the money for the ceremonies without an extra session of thelegistature. It is trae that the expense has heretotore fallen upon a small number, who, mimated by a proper pride and public spirit, have shouldered the burden rather than have the display disereditable to the capital city; bat really so large a proportion of our eltizens are interested in having a large attendance parts of the Union on the 4th of March that the contributions they cannot refuse esure, that the hotel-keepers, mly by a large attendance, > because their houses will be ; bunt we cannot believe that one of them would deetine to sabseribe ono narrow a round. They have public spirit as well as er citizens, and they know, too, that their keneral prosperity depends upon making Wash- 3ngton « city of attractions for people from all parts ofthe country. It is to their interest, therefore, ty be always prompt in joining heart- ily im an ertaking that proposes to encour- Rego vei to come, and to make their stay ant while here. Their rooms may be «rowded on the 4th of March “anyhow,” bat if iuey decline on that accoant to subscribe, they amay find other citizens declining to take part in celebration at other times calculated to grist tw the mill of the hotel-keepers. —+20e-- Boston bas acted with characteristic energy with the smail-pox plague. Unpro- st with a hospital fer the patients, sed, having so many sick that one or twobospitals would have been entirely insuffi- cient. her board of health has acted promptly and unanimously. As the board saysin an ad- tizess to the public, ‘action first and conference afterwards has been itsmotto.” The board has Ken such places as seemed best fitted for hos- because its members prefer “to have a en fifty ‘a suspected One in ambush.” Efficient health officers and cipators’ have been appointed. The board 4 the ald of the press, insists upon »pen acknowledgement of the con- tion of aairs, am! asks the co-operation of the its labors. Three hospitals have enerected. The weekly death rate as steadily deereased from 69 to 40, aud the boar! confidently looks forward to its more rapid decrease in the future. ———__-.ee- ready t ‘The question has been raised, what panish- quent will be meted out if any of the persons implicated im the credit mobilier proceedings shail have a crime fastened upon them? The Jaw covering the case is “an act to prevent trauds,” appreved February, 1353, which de- crees that any person offering a bribe of any Akind to any member of Congress, or any mem- ber receiving the same, shall, on conviction, be ned not more than three times the amount offered or given, and be imprisoned in a peni- tentiary not more than three years; and the per- fon bo'ding office shall forfeit it, and shall be ever disqualitied from holding any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States. ——-~«e-__ Eypr ay Commrsstoner.—It is amusing to note the names mentioned im connection with this important place and the ways resorted to to them conspicuously before the public. many the idea that the officer should be ith Indian affairs,or have lived in the Indian country, seems to have not the slightest reeognition. Bat by all thonghtful men it + accounted of the first importance that the nppointee, whoever he may be, shoald have a practical knowledge of the red man and the many Cifticulties attending his control by the govern- ment. —-.2e-—___ ‘The fact does not seem to be generally known, Perhaps, that the young state of Nevada legal- izes gambling, and exacts a license from card- sharpers and swindiers, It is officially stated in & late state document that the treasury ef the State is annually enriched by about $15,000from the granting of gamblers’ licenses. Efforts are xuow beng made for « reform in the matter by Procoring legislation to make gambling egal, and there is a strong pe ot that result Bcing attained. But something more than this is required to put the lody in state of defense against the searching at- nwsphere of winter. Damp basa depressing effect om the vital organs and the animal spirits, The amount of life power taken ont of the strongest of ua by the chilling vapors which frequently load the air at this period of the year is very considerable, and to the weak and languid they are extremely deleterious. ‘T+ protect the system against their effects, it must warily toned, regulated and reinforced as well a shielded outwardly by appropriate garments. ‘This essential service is more safely and satisfac- ily accomplished by the daily use of Hostet- Stomach Biter than by any other means within the province of medical science. ‘The fact bere stated is as incontrovertible as a dem. onstration in mathematic Nobody disputes it: It i+ a matter of common belief andi of general record. Here the ease might be rested; but the pubtic, nat- trally enough, wants to know why this famous vege- table specific is so far ahead of oli other medicines of its class. This reasonable curiosity can be readily gratified. The Bitters comprise five important ele- ments, viz: « stimulant, atonic, an aperient, and a blood depurent. Each of these components, as well as each of the other subordinate iugredients, is the purest and best of ite kind. They are proportioned tm accordance with a formula that has been in use for twenty years, and operate harmoniously and simul- taneously.
