This was fina’ly referred to a committee, and one of the | commissioners, tosettle the matter, moved that, “« In the sense of this board the colored children bave a perfect right to attend the same schools end classer,and enjoy the same privileges in all respects as the whites.” This provoked an excited discussion, but finally the matter came to a direet vote, and was passed by a large ma- jority, only two or three members opposing it. During the continued existence of the prejudice that prevails upon both sides, many deem it an iiladvised arrangement, particularly as both colors objected to it; but the principals of pri- vate schools are delighted with it, as they ex- -eet to see a great falling off of the attendance *t the public schools, aud a general resort to the ;ivate institutions of learning.
