It is found that the fault can- not befastened upon any one scape-goat lke the mansard roof, for all kinds of roof and all kindsof building material—wood, brick, stone and iron—bave, im turn, proved unreliable when the test has come. And, especially, when @ fire has gained full headway, all kinds of ma- terial seem alike incapable of resisting the in- tense heat. Brick stands the best, bat even this proves inadequate, mainly because Of the defective mode of structure, the thin- mess of the walls, &e., im modern build- ing work. The moral seems to be that we must reform our cheap, hasty style of run- ning up walls and return to the old solid | and thorough style of building. In the old times, when people built houses substantially for their own use, the outside walls of brick | houses were made from 15 to 22 inches in thick- ness, and party walls 9 inches. Nowadays the wal.s of our brick houses are not more than half this thickness, being seidom more than 4 inches for party walls, 9 inches for side walis and 14 inches for front walle. The result is that in case of a fire the modern brick wal! crumbles almost inevitably, atfords no stay to the dames, and is ‘Worthless for use again in rebuilding; while the cid time wails were almost never known to tell, and were nearly as serviceable as new walls in the work of reconstruction after a fire. If really want mere security against fire we must bavestringent building laws, vigilantly enforced. We must abandon our cheap shams and return to good honest work. pa “Glorified Murderers” A correspondent writes to us, in answer toa late editorial in this paper under the above | bead, @ pretty long communication, under- taking by text and argument to show that mur- derers may, like the thief on the cross, go to their doom with the comforting assurance that they will “sup the same night in Paradise.” Our correspondent seems to write in good faith, and bas brought an amount of data to bear that shows him to be a close reader of the Scriptures, but in view of the fact that marders are being committed at about the rateof one a day, we cannot see the necessity for publishing th’s reassuring matter for the benefit of those who may have this crime in contemplation. it may be ae well, on the whole, that they should not feel too sure,'that, instead of going straight to Paradise they may not land in the other place. As near as we can gather the drift of the argument of our correspondent, the mur- derer, by bis gallows repentance, goes direct to Paradise, while his victim is sent to bis last account unprepared, with ali his sins upon his bead, to spend his eternity in torment. So the murderer would seem to have the best of it, both im thw world and the next. As above stated, we do not see the particular need at this time of enlarging upon this view of the case. ote eer ——_ it would seem that our Alexandria neighbors don’t have to depend upon Washington any longer for the small-poxs, since they have a pretty good supply of their own on hand. A few weeks ago, whenever a case of the disease appeared, the papers were Guick to announce | ‘that it was contracted in Washington, and their reason for the statement was found in the fact that the patient had some time before visited this city. The fact is that there is hardly a city of any size in the United States but what has the small-pox to a greater or less extent just now. tally said that we have fewer cases of the dis- ease than any other city of similar size in the country.
