Coroner Patterson arrived at the station-house at Ll o’clock this morning, and, assisted by Do J. F. Hartigan, proceeded to hold an inquesc, Sergeant Kneas having sammoned a jury, wita J.d. Elliott as foreman. Mr. O. D. Barrett ap- peared as counsel for accased. The body of the victim was laying in the loft over the tier of evlis im the rear building of the station-house, dressed in grey pants, with a bine flannel shirt, ‘The tace was blackened with c al dust. Daniel Weich testified that a few words hat taken piace between deceased and Lyden: saw the hat off of Lyden and his nose bleeding, but everything had been settled between them, and nearly hait an hour afterwards Welch was «it- ting down ona pile of coal, when Lyden w. filling his dirt into bis barrow; witness heard noise, and turned about just in time to see the second blow struck by Lyden; saw no other he noise he heard was t blow struck. By a juror:—It was clese upon 5 o’elock when the blows were struck; Welch was sitting on a pile of coal close by the wall, and Lyden ap- proached him from a side direction, his lett side being turned towards Lyden. y Mr. Barrett:—The blow was struck trom the side of deceased, and not from behind; he made no noise except to give sort of grunt, Redman Sullivan, laberer at the gasworks, testified substantially as the preceding wit- nesses. His testimony was corroborative of that of the preceding wit- nesses. ‘The last witness testified that he heard Lyden say just as he struck Welch with the shovel, “You son of a gun, you hit mea while ago.’ Welch had his head resting on bis hand, leaning up towards the wall, when struck.
