TO THR WASHINGTON TOLICY-ROLDERS oF ‘THe MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY OF EW YORK My attention has been called to a publication rt of New 7 the city papers, signed by @ num! ‘ork policy-holdersof your company, protesti: against the posed action of the trustees m4 reducing the rates for new insurers after the first of January next, as prejudicial to the interests of the present members. As the agent of this corporation in this blish afew words of éxplanation in regard to this matter, which, I trust, will prove satisfactory. ‘The idea that the interests of the present policy-hoiders would be at allinjariously af- fected by the proposed change, is simply absurd. The Mutual Life Insurauce Company, k experience of 30 years, and a usiness: ‘ge enough tocommand the laws of average, has established beyond any question, that the “loading” or margin allowed for expensesin the present rates, Is larger than is necessary in their mode of conducting business. This excess bas been heretotore ically returned to the policy-holders ( w with the —— arising from other sources) in their so-called “ divi- dends.” These dividends, in the case of an ordinary life policy, do net fall short, even for the first year.et 25 per cent.of the whole an- nual premium, end it is the opinion of their eminent actuary, Professor Bartlett, late of West Point, that this percentage of present rates can befuily maintained in the fature, aiter making the most liberai allowance for the legal reserve, and for every possible un- iavorable contingency. The proposed change simply contemplates aying hew incurers this dividend in advance. ‘There seems to be little use to receive one hun- dred dollars from a mee? older at the begin- f the year, with a distinct understanding 30 per cent. of it is to be retarned to himatthe close. If the reduction infringed in | any way on that portion of the premium re- | thousand policy-bolders of the Mutual Li served for losses, or legal premium reserve, it would be obviously unwi: but it does not so intringe—ij comes solely from the ‘loadin margin for expenses; and the company. by watchtulness, pradence and economy, and by its enormous bulk of business, has a0 diminished the ratio of expense that the reduction can be made with perfect safety, and will be an obvious conventence to those seeking insurance. w, as to iis effect on existing policies: A very brief examination will show that it only afieetsthem bent Gm Each new policy-holder will be charged in his accruing dividends with the full amount of the reduction in original premium, and of course his dividends will be proportionately smaller than those of the old- rate policy holders. Not only so, bat the divi- dends of the old policy-hoiders will be larger; for, as there is uo increase proposed in the com. missions of agents, an enormous rediiction « expense wall be secured, which, of cour: be a direct gaiu to the sum available for bution among ail the insured The agents of the company are certainly bard-lit by the proposed change, and have the right, f anybody bas,to enter complaint and Protest, s# their commissions are from first year's premtams only; but the Mutual Life In- surance Company, of New York, bas always been in the habit of coudacting its business eolely in the interest of the policy-holders, and does not Consider itself as a mere source of pa- tronage and prefit for its employes. In conclur'on,! would say that it is not diffi cult to understand the virtuous indignation of other companies, nor their lively sympathy for the imaginary wrongs of policy-holders; nor ‘s it remarkable that among the sevent | few dozen conid be found tosign the publication | alladed te abow Many an article of drrss_women’s and men’s garment>—are cast away, which by alittle renovation would serve the purpose jast as weil a Lew goods, and money be saved byit.
