Amid the red glare of the fires, which lit up the mist and the white rushing waves, the brave sailors bent to the task of sendin, women and children safe to the shore. This was ex- tremely difficult, because it was necessary to watch @ chance, in each case, between the rolls ofthe ship from one side to the other. The work went manfuliy on, however, and. in most instances, with success. But there were some beartrendering exceptions. A woman, with her child, was put in the cradle, and the little one wasswept by the sea from its mother’s arms. Two men trusted themselves to @ rope, as the shipswung shoreward, dropping with the hope ot swimming through the surf. Both were crowned. So was another poor woman with a babs, who refused to leave the vessel. e Royal Adelaide was now fast going to pieces: and toward the end there was an inci- dent, beautiful and touching, even amid so m ny acts of terror and ot heroism. A sailor was the last to leave the wreck, and he carried with him, lashed to his back a little boy. A nice question, it will be seen, resented itself as to the measure of responsi ‘lity for Stanford's death. If the conductor had not pushed him from the car. he would probably have recovered of the stab; withoat the stab, the fall from the car would’ probably have been harmless. The coroner's jury on the inquest acquitted the conductor; Quinn, less Ineky, has just been found guilty and sentenced to fifteen years’ imprisonment. Whatever may be thought of the former verdict, there will be few to cavil at the latter. Whether Quinn was or was not morally guilty of murder, he was guilty of usimg murderously a murderous weap- on, which men of his class have heretofore been ene > AUOINON SALY. _AUCTION SALES. Bt WM.
